Hi there,
I have an old roland tr 505 drum machien lying around that I haven't used in years and just out of curiousity I did a search for it on the internet, and it seems its still in demand people willing to spend good money for it on ebay.
Just wondering as it beats me, why is it still quite popular, what kind of music do people usually use it for and compared to realdrums (well can't really compare it I know) is there a use I could put it to?

Rap and electronic still use the TR505 and TR626 soundsets quite a bit. While the samples themselves can found easily in a lot of places (including the VSC) the hardware unit playing them is what seems to be desirable. Deep thump bass drum and tiny snare sound..  I NEVER get rid of old equipment, just for this reason. I have a few Roland devices that are worth as much now as when I bought new (or close). I have the TR626 here.

The Roland TR 808 is also desirable. There's even a reference to it in a Beck song. ("Bangin' like a 808/(What? Say what?"))
Now, if I could just find someone who wants my Korg DDM-110 "Super Drums."

Yep, 808 is often the sample set quoted. My tr626 was made after the 808 (and 909 and 505)..

Those samples are used on a lot of models from that era. The device used to generate the sound (hardware usually) seems to be desirable in recent years. The samples are everywhere, but some feel the playback device makes a difference. They are 12 bit after all!

Of course, I still have my DR-5, DR-550, DR650 and HR-10, and still use them to put a hard edge on my New Age Albums...in fact I think I've got a model 515 around here somewhere.
