Hi all,

I'm new so please forgive any silly questions I may ask.

I purchased Band in a Box for use with my DAW (Logic Studio 9). Since I'm a guitar player I want to be able to type chord changes into BIAB, create midi tracks for bass, drums, and keys, drag them over to Logic, and edit them.

Since many BIAB styles I enjoy use real tracks (which is understandable since they sound great!), I'm wondering if it's possible to change a preference somewhere in order to create midi tracks instead. I realize I could edit the audio tracks, but I find it easier to edit midi. Thanks for any tips and advice.

Kind regards,
Dana

Yes Dana. Open the real tracks picker dialog, and check for each instrument the box "disable (force this track to midi)".
It is like a crime :-D but i know Logic has good instruments.

Yes you can do this, but you're not going to get a MIDI track that is playing the same notes as the RealTracks. If there IS a MIDI part assigned to that track, which isn't always the case, it won't be the same playing as the RealTracks instrument.

If the RealTracks instrument has notation (RealChart) available, and if you have "Save RealChart in MIDI file" checked in the RealTracks preferences - then you will get a MIDI track in your MIDI file that has the same notes as the RealTracks. However this is a transcription, so it won't necessarily sound natural when played.

Thanks for providing this information. I wasn't really expecting the midi to be an exact transcription of the RealTracks. As long as it is stylistically 'in the neighborhood', I would be satisfied. I usually do some modifications to the midi file anyway in order to get the performance exactly as I want.

Just to clarify, in some styles there may not be a way to obtain a midi track once a RealTrack for an instrument is disabled? Is there a way to know which styles do not have midi in addition to RealTracks?

Good to know, thank you. This will really speed up my workflow.

You could do it the other way around. Lots of Band in a Box files on the net.

Choose a midi STYLE!

Substitute RealTracks where wanted, if underlined you can change it to Midi.

Because the original style is MIDI you start with all Midi tracks.

There are lots of Midi styles.

There is also Notes Norton (google that) who makes custom styles AND sells charts with Fakebooks, like Classic Rock etc..or Jazz Books...not to be overlooked.

At last count I could find close to 10,000 Band in a Box format files on the net.
