A friend of mine brought some files over to work on at my house, he has recently upgraded to 2011 and I am still on 2010, after trying to get his files to play I stopped getting several of the midi tracks to play. If I opened the same tracks in realband they would build and play fine but not in BIAB, additionally and now more importantly, my own files will no longer play correctly on my own computer. Could settings in his 2011 files have corrupted my program? And How can I fix it?
I'm using 2010 everything pac running off the ex HD

Have you checked your midi device selections and audio drivers?
A new install may have changed those
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

Hi Folkguy,
When things like this happen to me, I head for the "Factory Reset" under options. BIAB will save your current configuration so that you can reload back into BIAB if you need to.
As precaution, what I do prior to the reset is to use the "Snipping Tool" in Vista to save a jpg file of my Opt | Prefernces | MIDI Driver set-up. A screen-capture using a graphics program would also do the same. I've never needed to use it but I work on the principle that this graphic is a handy visual reference of what I have if I need to compare what I have after the reset with what I had before the reset.
Regards, Noel

Folkguy11, I do not think the 2011 files could have harmed your BIAB program or computer in any way unless your friend's computer transferred a virus to yours, but Noel's suggestion of Opt., Return to Factory Settings is something to try first.
About the beginning of your post, that the 2011 files would not work on 2010, this is understandable if your friend's songs used RealTracks. There were changes to the way RealTracks are handled in 2011. If you've been following any of the threads from folks who did upgrade to 2011, you will see that there is a lot of discussion about whether or no one can "erase the +/- files" after upgrading. 2011 uses a different algorithm that, if your PC is fast enough to handle it, does not use 2/3 of the RealTracks files, and they can be erased for a tremendous saving of disk space. However, a trade-off for this change is that BIAB 2011 files are no longer backward compatible with earlier versions of BIAB.

I checked my drivers first thing. I did not install his 2011 I only used files from his drive. I do have virus software active so I doubt the virus angle.
I will look for the opt restore and try that, but will that restore to how things were before or how they are now?

Opt, Return to Factory Settings restores BIAB to the way it worked when it shipped. It cannot do any harm.
Note: if you have set anything unusual like fonts, rows per page etc. you should make a record of those before you do the Return. Same for MIDI devices and DXi if you use that. You may be prompted to save your current configuration first, but I think that did not become a feature until version 2011, or maybe 2010.5.
Doing this is a very standard response when things in BIAB do not work as they should. All it does is erase a few configuration files that are then re-created.

OK, I did the return to factory settings and it had no effect, I tested my midi driver with the "piano test" and also by using the pop up drum set you click on to make noise and that worked, however styles that use midi instruments make no sound at all and styles that use real tracks will only play for a few measures before they cut out as well.
I don't understand how using these 2011 generated BIAB files could have mess everything up so bad, there should be a warning label. (trying to keep my sense of humor)

Update: I went back through the midi preferences and found one little hidden field that said "none" instead of my dxi synth. That should have set itself when I selected the dxi synth in the opt. menu.
I went back and played some of the factory included midi files and they then worked, and my own generated files now work also but I still have no idea what caused it to go haywire in the first place.

Glad you are keeping your sense of humor. Some others here do not.
Please call PG Music Support and reference this thread. They should be able to get you fixed up, and if there really is something in 2011 files that can mess up an earlier version, they need to know about it.

Our posts crossed.
So you're good now?
You might try to repeat the experiment, and if it happens again, report it to PG Music.
