Hello all,
I used to use a great Free ScreenCapture Program. It did everything great. Razor sharp full screen or any selected area. It was pretty old.
I have reinstalled XP so many times I can't find it or remember what it was.
I used it to capture software setups screens. It was a big help.

Can someone Recommend a good one?
Thank you, Wayne,

rharv,
I tried all key combinations and nothing. It doesn't do anything on my machine.

What I had I was able to draw a quick box around any section of the screen and save it.
Thanks, Wayne

When you hit 'PntScn' (I hold ctrl as an old habit when hitting it) Windows copies a picture of your screen to the clipboard. It has done this with all recent versions of windows.

Then you have to paste it somewhere.
You can open Paint (or any graphics program), create a new blank document and paste it in. Works with Paint, Photoshop, Photofiltre, every one I've ever tried.

Tip- make the blank document larger than your screen so it all pastes, then crop what you want. Example - if screen res is 1024 X 768 make the document 1200 X 800 ...

For XP there is none better (and believe me I know) than "2020", just google 2020 screen capture.

Why not consider IrfanView ( http://www.irfanview.com/ ). It really is great free Window's program. Besides using it for screen capture, I also use it to rename batches of files and to make slide shows/screen savers of family photos.

Thank you all. I finally got the 'PntScn' to work.
A lot of good programs out there. It seems Cnet reviews are a mess. I have to go by my own usage of a program.
For now 'PntScn' is good enough for what I need.

I can't believe I didn't know "hold ctrl and hit PrtSrn" after all these years. Thanks Rharv!

Thank you all for your help.
I really appreciate it, Wayne,

I used PrtScr. It's free and you can draw a box or whatever you want to save.

once the whole screen is an image, you can crop what you want
..from earlier in the thread

Thanks for a timely post on print screen. I too have had no success in using window vista to get a print screen. I have tried using both "ctl" buttons, both "shift" buttons, "alt" button all in conjunction with the "prt sc" button to no avail. I have also tried just the "prt sc" button. While trying these commands I also tried pasting them to a word document and a paint document again to no avail. I have tried doing this off and on for over a year when the mood strikes me and have given up. I just know I have to be doing something easily and obviously wrong but am darned if I know. I am running window$ vi$ta on a hp lap top. I have no difficulty in obtaining and using a printscreen software, but my stubborn and inquisitive nature nags for a resolution to the original problem. Me again, well I finally figured out how to get a "prt sc" on my hp laptop. For other users having the same problem look for an extra keyboard key that has "fn" inside a square. If you have one or one similiar, Press "fn" and "prt sc" at the same time and you will get a screen shot that you can paste into word and paint. From there you can crop and edit. I just did both. What I still can't do is copy the screen shot from word or paint and paste it into this forum page. I've tried pasting both paint and word directly from a screen shot as well with no success. Rharv do you have any further hints/suggestions. Thanks. DennisD

You have to post the picture at an internet server and link to it. Google docs would probably work, or photobucket or flickr or something like that.
Post pic at that site, then copy the link from there and paste into a post here.

PGMusic does not host user images.

Thanks for updating us with the PrtSc solution.

For Windows XP and lower you may find this useful, MWSnap3 It is a small program enabling the taking of a screen shot or any part of the screen. Oh and it is freeware.

http://www.mirekw.com/winfreeware/mwsnap.html

For Windows Vista and Windows 7 there is already a screen capture program installed as part of Windows, it is called "Snipping tool" and can be found in the accessories.

Sorry for my short prior post. Prtscr is a program that you can download for free (find it via Google). I have it on the task bar. I click the mouse on it to make it active. The screen capture is using the PrtSc button on the keyboard. A little help screen pops up then and you can use the cntl button plus the mouse to draw a rectangle around what you want to keep. you can enter a file name and send it to the desktop. For me it has been very handy to copy things that I might want to refer to later. You can edit what you save in a graphics pgm such as Paint, but I haven't had the need to. FWIW

It's not free, but my favorite screen capture program is Snagit from TechSmith (the same people that make Camtasia). I like that I can annotate the screen capture before saving to file.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
