Hi again. I wonder if I could ask you good people to help me with another puzzle.

If I have a track for a non concert pitch instrument, eg Tenor sax, the chords and sheet music for this instrument should be transposed. So eg guitar piano etc in Bb, Sax in C. But I don't want to transpose the whole piece.

I cant find a way of doing this. When I search the help files I get how to transpose part of the song ie one section, but this is obviously not what I need. I realise the main screen cant display more than one key/chord at a time, but can it be done on the notation window for a given instrument?

In practice its unlikely the Sax player would play "off the screen" and I probably only need this to print the Sax part, so I guess I could transpose all tracks before printing, and then switch back. Bit clunky though.

Any ideas?

TIA Tom

There are several ways to transpose, depending on the need.

As you say, you could just transpose the whole song up two half-steps and print the part for the sax, then remember to transpose it back. If you did it that way, the sax could not read off the screen and sound correct, any more than they could do so before the transposition.

If the sax is going to play along with the screen, use Opt., Preferences, Notation. Find Transpose options in the middle of the dialog box. Some of the common transposing instruments are available in the pulldown options. The good thing about doing it this way is that the original pitch remains the same; only the notation changes. Again, remember to change it back before you save the song and exit.

I'm not sure if you asked this directly, but the one thing you cannot do in BIAB is have two instruments, one of which is a transposing instrument, read off the same BIAB screen together and have each get the notes they need. That is where transposing in your head comes in, a very necessary skill for the sax player to develop.

I read from the screen and print lead sheet for transposing instruments all the time, and what I do to quickly switch between Bb, Eb, and concert pitch notation is:
- Click the P icon in the toolbar (Practice)
- Click the Tenor Sax, Trumpet, Alto Sax, or concert icon to transpose the notation
- Click 8va or 8vb, if necessary, to move the notation down or up an octave.
- Click the lead sheet icon to see or print the lead sheet
