It was suggested yesterday that I play some '70's rock. So what are some good tunes for a solo to do?

Bohemian Rhapsody

Just kidding!

You might try Pandora, and setup a 70's Rock station. You'll get lots of ideas there. (www.pandora.com)

john,

i'm on dial-up and listen to pandora all day, no problem. you may need to use the lo-fi option but it's just fine. it will detect if your connection is too slow for high quality listening then suggest lo-fi. you get 40 hours per month free. if you register, it saves your prefs and your created stations. highly recommended to all music lovers in your life. the only down side to "free" is that is supported by ads and banners and not yet available in canada. a brief ad comes after about each 6 songs.

Just a bit of overkill, eh?

A lot of good songs are not here - better check each year rather than the decade - where are the country/rock, folk/rock groups - like Eagles, Neil Young? Guess it depends on what your audience-type likes, John.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were formed in 1976.

John Mellencamp started performing as Johnny Cougar in 1976.

John,

As I always say to these requests for recommendations:

- who is the target audience (background/geography/age/tastes)?
- what kind of material do they seem to appreciate?
- any chance of asking the suggester for some specific artists?

I’m not sure how useful Ian’s billboard listing is.
Taking just the top 20, I count 6 funk or cod funk tracks, 1 country, 3 pure pop, 7 soul/ballads and just 3 that could loosely be described as rock (and they include Maggie May!)

I thus offer you an alternative rock list:

. Hotel California - The Eagles
. Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen
. Layla - Derek and the Dominos
. Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
. Brown Sugar - The Rolling Stones
. Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac
. More Than a Feeling - Boston
. Roxanne - The Police
. Dream On - Aerosmith
. Another Brick in the Wall, Pink Floyd
. London Calling - The Clash
. Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd
. Lola - The Kinks
. Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple
. Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits
. Walk This Way - Aerosmith
. Who'll Stop the Rain - Creedence Clearwater Revival
. Heart of Gold - Neil Young
. All Right Now - Free
. (Don't Fear) The Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult
. Bang a Gong (Get It On) - T. Rex
. Black Magic Woman - Santana
. Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin
. Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen
. Night Moves - Bob Seger
. Brass in Pocket - The Pretenders
. You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet - Bachman-Turner Overdrive
. Tumbling Dice - The Rolling Stones
. Old Time Rock 'n' Roll - Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band
. Message in a Bottle - The Police
. One of These Nights - The Eagles

. Take It Easy - The Eagles
. Angie - The Rolling Stones
. The Boys Are Back in Town - Thin Lizzy
. The Joker - The Steve Miller Band
. Dreams - Fleetwood Mac
. Have You Ever Seen the Rain - Creedence Clearwater Revival
. Radar Love - Golden Earring
. Rhiannon - Fleetwood Mac
. Just What I Needed - The Cars
. My Sharona - The Knack
. Werewolves of London - Warren Zevon
. Refugee - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
. Listen to the Music - The Doobie Brothers
. Fly Like an Eagle - The Steve Miller Band
. Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas
. Surrender - Cheap Trick
. Cocaine - Eric Clapton

. Crocodile Rock - Elton John
. Stuck in the Middle with You - Stealers Wheel
. Life in the Fast Lane - The Eagles
