Hi All!

I'm putting together an arrangement of the classic, "Feel Like Makin' Love" (song by Roberta Flack among others). I'm sure most of you have heard it before (or I would hope so).
You can easily "Youtube" the title if you aren't familiar with the song (just make sure your listening to the Roberta Flack version).

Everything is going smoothly as far as entering chords until I get to the next to the last bar of the tune.
Here there are 3 chords played in the next to the last measure: one on the "and of beat 3, one on the downbeat of beat 4, and one on the "and" of beat 4.

I can't seem to find the right combination create this rhythm.

Can anyone help me with this??

It would be a huge help!

Thanks,

Harpo

The and's of downbeats can be addressed by using the ^ symbol when entering the chord. In the help section I think they call it pushes. I have that tune in my set list always liked it. Don't know about the arrangement I'm using I put it in years ago and it could be different. Something to be aware of is that the style used can have an effect on how pushes are treated or in some cases largely ignored.

Even with the push (^) you cannot do this directly. You can get either a push for beat four, to appear on 3and, or no push to appear right on beat four, but not both.

One workaround is to do Edit, Expand duration of chords by two. Then adjust the tempo and select a new style. The chords would then be on beats 2, 3 and 4 of the second measure.

Another option is to look at the expanded styles marketed by Notes Norton.

When I used to play this tune I "pushed" 1 of the last bar in the BIAB arrangement. Later, Ray

Hi Harpo,

You can only have one chord per beat. Since you want two chords per beat during the last half of one measure, you might want to try this work-around. Instead of one 4/4 bar, write the first half of the measure as a 2/4 bar in the regular tempo. Then, write the second half of the bar as one measure of 4/4 set to twice the tempo of the song. In the double-speed measure, start with a rest, and then make the three chords either shots or holds.

I did not hear when this occurs in "Feel Like Making Love", but I experimented with this work-around in a variety of styles ands sometimes it sounds really good. I had it looping the whole time I was typing this.

Here is the step-by-step process of how I simulated having one measure end with three chords as eighth note pick-ups to the next measure:
1. Use F5 to set the measure to 2 beats.
2. Use F5 in the next measure to set it to 4 beats, and set the tempo to twice that of the rest of the song.
3. Type in the rest and the first chord. My expirimental song was in C, an the 3 eighth note pick-up chords were Dm, G7, Bdim. I decided to not have the bass and drums rest, so this is how I typed in the first half of the fast measure: C.bd,Dm..
And this is how I typed in the second half of the fast measure: G7..,Bdim..
4. Use F5 in the following measure to set the tempo back to the normal tempo.

Hope this helps,
Jim

BTW: Using the ^ symbol to push the chord moves it ahead of the beat (anticipation), not to the 'and' of the beat.

When I woke up this morning, I was thinking about this some more and one of the things I realized was that I could have used ALT+F5 to make the edits to my chords, shots, holds, and rests, instead of typing them in each time with the dots and commas. That would have been easier for all the changes I was making to my experimental song.

The other thing I was thinking about, is based on Ray's reply about using an anticipation in the last measure. I had an new idea about what you were looking for, and I wanted to try to create that effect.

One thing I tried was to get rid of the last chord in my fast measure, and put an anticipation in the last measure. That did not work because I got silence on the third beat of the fast measure. So, I found that I need to create that antication by just putting the last chord at the end of the fast measure. If that chord is to be held then it sounds fine, otherwise the chord is repeated on the first beat of the last measure.

I hope this helps. If not, it was a fun experiment. I learn a lot by trying to solve the problems I find here on the forum!

Hello All,

I had a song that modulated from C to Eb. The C occurred on the 3 AND; C# on 4; D on 4 AND; Eb on 1.
Similar to Harpo's example.

In BB, under EDIT you can expand chords by 2 and so then I typed in my desired chord changes.

In PT, under EDIT is 'Length of Midi music.' allowing you to decrease (what you just expanded) by 50%.
By using the default values, this actually works!

Modulations are very effective, and for this one tune, worth the effort; however, it takes a lot of work and precision.

Percy
