Is there a reason that some songs don't always play with the right instrumentation? There are times where the bass or some other part plays piano. If I stop and re-start the song, it corrects itself. It is like the synth is not resetting. I have also noticed that if I start/stop/restart a song, some lingering notes are heard at the start of the song.
Is there something I can do to eliminate the problem?
Currently, I'm doing the arrangements using VST synths (Forte and VSCDXi) but eventually will use an external synth.
Thanks, R

Sometimes when I download midis, the creator has inserted sysex messages at the beginning of the midi. Once deleted, the file usually plays the designated instruments. Care must be taken when doing this, so be sure you have a backup.

Yes this is a big problem with internet freebie midis. Who knows what software or keyboard controller or even a guitar or wind controller was used to record them in the first place then of course the file could have been modified by many people along the way and reposted to different websites. In spite of this I have a pretty good collection of very nice sounding midis but I did have to clean some of them up. I always make a copy of the weird ones and store them in a "needs work" folder until I can fix them.

All SEEMS to be working now...
I stripped all non-note events out and put my own in. One problem I stumbled upon was when I changed the channel of the part, I had to also Edit!Rechannel the part. I assumed RB would do this. I've learned more about working with Midi that I ever wanted. It makes me realize how nice of a job BIAB does!
Thx, R

Biab certainly does make it easier but good midi's can be very useful. There's some floating around that are top notch pro quality like the ones posted by Doug Mckenzie in Australia. Check him out, just Google his name. He has his own website and he's on Youtube with good Biab video tutorials. He's a master level jazz pianist and has tons of great Biab and midi files. You can usually tell if the midi is a good one even of some of the instruments/channels/CC volume etc are off. That makes them worth the time to rework. I usually look for pro quality rhythm/percussion tracks and equally pro level live solo's. A good midi solo is worth it's weight in gold as a learning tool because you can see the notes playing on the keyboard display and in the notation and it doesn't matter what instrument the solo is. You can pretty much adapt any solo to another instrument. Since it's midi you can use Real Band and put a killer rhythm track from a midi into a Biab arrangement with some editing and come up with some really good stuff. I've mixed a midi drum track with precise drum fills with a Real Drum percussion track and made it sound like Pancho Sanchez.

See my post "Patch Cache Problem" from 4/4/11 in the Realband Wishlist forum regarding a software bug with the "Patch Cache" feature of the program. It seems like its not working, and needs to be fixed. This causes Realband to play incorrect patches.
I have been using Realband to analyze MIDI files in order to import them into BIAB. I have done at least 50 files, so I have had a lot of time working with Realband. In the last few days, I have started getting Microsoft "Access Violation" error messages when Realband plays certain MIDI files. Usually these files have a lot of tracks and/or MIDI events. I have had this problem with 3 or 4 out of the 50 files. I don't know yet whether this is another bug, if there is a problem with the MIDI file being played, or if my Realband.exe file is starting to have a problem. I hope its not my exe program. I have not yet updated to version 4b, maybe that will change things. I'll test the problem MIDI files after upgrading. I really don't want to re-install Realband if at all possible, because you have to re-install BIAB as well (Realband doesn't have its own install program), and BIAB is behaving well now on my PC (let sleeping dogs lie).

Yeah, 3 or 4 out of 50 sounds about right to me. Some downloaded files are just weird and that's it. I've gotten pretty good at editing midi files but I've still got a few that I can't get to play correctly no matter what I do and I have no idea why. I've gone into the event list, played around with program changes, stripped out any sysex and still the instruments are messed up or something else that makes it unusable. There's cases where someone recorded the midi in real time and didn't set the tempo and didn't use a metronome so it says it's at 120 for example but it plays at a different tempo and that tempo can vary because it was done live just like you setting down with an old Tascam cassette recorder. Can't do much with a file like that unless I want to convert it to audio, put it into the ACW and create a tempo map. I have over a thousand midi's I just delete one like that and move on to another one. If it's a song I really want I can usually find another version somewhere.
I have had an ongoing problem-bug?-with RB when I do a lot of edits such as cleaning up a midi file but it can be with audio edits too. I can work for 30-40 minutes or so cutting and pasting, adding/deleting notes or events and I notice RB starting to act strange including slowing down, access violations and strange things happening in the piano roll window. Closing RB and reopening it clears it up. I've never had to actually reinstall it though and I've been using RB since it was a gleam in Peter's eye. Just make sure you're current with the updates. For me anyway this is one of those things that if it clears up by doing a 30 second closing/reopening then who cares what the actual problem may be but I have reported it during beta testing. It's probably something to do with ram allocation and closing/reopening free's the memory.
Like any other piece of software out there, it's not perfect and never will be. It's like learning to live with another person. Everybody has their quirks and we either learn to live with them or give up and move on but I've learned the grass is rarely greener with people or software.
