Hello all
Mixing (maybe I should call it sound processing) is a difficult art – at least for me . Just recently I stumbled over a beautiful knowledge resource online and I would like to share this link with anyone who is interested

Mixing Secrets For The Small Studio
http://www.cambridge-mt.com/ms-intro.htm

Tons of good stuff there, incl. lots of wav/mp3 sound samples. Many thanks to Mike Senior (Sound on Sound, Cambridge Music Technology) who created this online resource.

Here's another site that's been a goldmine: http://audio.tutsplus.com/

I found some great tutorials on EQ and compression here that have really helped me improve the sound of my tracks.

The best thing I ever did was invest in quality monitors (powered Wharfedale monitors) and quality headphones (Sennheiser).

Also, patience helps a lot. Even when you think you have it "right", record that mix and then tweak a little more to see if there's a "little mo' betta" mix in there somewhere. I have gotten as far as v12 and then decided that v3 was the best of them. A little more reverb on the solo, a little less echo on the vocal.... whatever. It's your canvas to paint any color you like.

Also it's important to take a break and listen a day or two later, we tend to fool ourselves in long sessions. Especially helpful to start a session listening to a reference recording (something professionally done in that genre that you like the sound of), then put in the mix you did a couple days ago for comparison. Gives perspective. Many overlook this opportunity to have a fresh listen.

Gotta go, Wings are coming back on

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

and if you think you really have it sounding good....... convert it to a WAV file and burn a CD. I usually gang up 2-4 songs like this and then go for a ride in my car, which has an excellent stereo.. I then listen to those songs and my wife makes notes as I call out changes to her.... "song 1, less bass... bring up drums a bit.... the vocal is too loud on the chorus..." etc.

then I have some notes to go back to the workstation and make those changes.

And by the way......... don't try to mix/master with headphones on........... trust those fantastic monitors.... you can't go wrong with your ears then........ but headphones don't always paint the true picture of your sound.

Just my .02 worth.

...and if you are going to use the track on a gig, be sure to listen to it on the same equipment you will be using at the gig. This has gotten me several times. It sounds great at home but unpleasant surprises happened at the gig.

I'll add the one tip that I believe has helped my mixes more than any other:

High pass filter nearly every track excepting bass lines and kick drums. Where you high pass depends on the source and what sounds right.

This works particularly well on vocals and any other mic'ed track you might have at home. With my vocals, I usually filter somewhere between 120 and 200 Hz, depending on the song.

This is a fairly unsophisticated technique, but incredibly valuable. When tracking, if you have a low-cut switch on your mic, it's almost always advantageous to engage it; again, except for kick drum or tracks that intentionally should have the lowest frequency content in it.

Try it, you'll like it.

I quite often use a freeware tool called Cleansweep to highpass/lowpass most of the tracks. It's available for from Brainworx here http://www.brainworx-music.de/en/plugins/bx_cleansweep_v2
