I ma just getting to want to edcit the melody and control it a little. There are a couple of things that are troubling me.

I ma using a track called Stolen Moments which has a melody already written...

1] I hit the melody embelishment function and nothing happened to hte melody

3] I want to control when the melody plays, it seems options are limited??

I was trying to have the melody playing the 'head' as is standard in jazz, but it seems that you can only have it play the first AND last chorus? This is ok but not what I would usually wantv for an outro.

Maybe I have things wrong or trhere is a workaround?

thnakyou

Good tune (Oliver Nelson, 1961).

The song would not have come from BIAB with the melody (copyright violation), so did you enter this melody yourself? Or is this a MIDI file downloaded, or an audio track? Once we know where it came from, we can perhaps help.

No I did not enter the melody myself, I really dont know where it came from originally.

Apols for the spleeling I fogeet t0o cheek

The head or tune is coming from the melody track, and it shows up as notation too. It sounds like an audio track, but I am pretty useless when it comes to the gubbins (anglo slang) of BIAB. I am not really sure how to check it does not sound like MIDI

Under the menus go to Audio and fin where to kill the audio track.

Try it again.

Systematic wins the day.

Hi John,
I just realised it IS a MIDI instrument (vibes) - got that wrong. I checked by changing the MIDI (top left box) to another instrument and the sound changed.

I dont want to kill the audio/MIDI just want it limited to playing the head. What I really want to do is dictate when and where I hear the audio bar by bar chorus by chorus. Is this possible?

Hey Matt, if you are still watching, try playing the head of this tune and then straight into a minor blues same tempo and key - maybe a sax solo sounds great, return to the head later again maybe outro chorus

Let me know if you try this

Perhaps you will want to experiment with the options for the F5 key, where you can Mute a track whenever needed (and unmute it later). It will help you understand if you can be more clear about the different between audio and MIDI.

EDIT: just saw your last post, posted before I finished this one. Perhaps if you described in full detail exactly what you are doing, it would help us.

Hi again Matt

Just so you know I do understand the difference between audio and MIDI.

I guess what I really want to know is how to control BAIB songs so that when the soloist or melodist plays, preferably in terms of bar by bar but at least chorus by chorus. Obvious examples are when the jazz band plays the hear and then each instrument improvises for a while perhaps (and perhaps not) coming back to play a final chorus in some enhanced way. Some songs you could get verse - solo - verse, kind of structures too where the verse is a tune handled by an instrument in BIAB and the chorus could be an improvised solo.

It seems such an obvious thing to do but so far no luck here

thanks for the input

OK, that's getting more clear, thanks. I don't use either of those functions, Melodist or Soloist (that's what they pay me to do), so I'll defer to others who have experience with them.

Zero, go to the menu line at the top of your screen and hit "Melody". There's many options there to do exactly what you want like "kill melody in middle choruses", "first chorus only", "Transpose", etc. The big thing to keep in mind is if you do that and then later you change the structure of the song, the melody will get messed up. The easiest thing to do if that happens is to go to the Melody menu again and select "Copy melody to whole song" then go back and edit out what you don't want.

Another way to change the melody is to edit the notes themselves either in editable notation mode or in the piano roll window. Either one of those allows you to change everything about the melody from adding or editing individual notes to deleting individual notes or whole sections. If using the menu options above doesn't do what you want, going into the piano roll window certainly will. You put your mouse just to the left and above the section of notes you want to delete and hold down the left click button and drag the mouse to the end of the section. You will see that there's now a box around the notes and they are all red. You either hit the delete key or right click and pick delete, I forget which now.

Hi Gary and welcome to the forum. I know you didn't do this deliberately but this is called hijacking a thread. Your query is perfectly valid but it has nothing to do with Zero's question. At the top of each forum is a button that says "Post". Hit that and it starts a new thread. We can answer you in that thread.

This is a really interesting and informative thread.

I have a question: If the original song file has a midi style with melody, how do I change it to use real tracks? I have changed the style to a real tracks style but the melody is still midi. How do I get the melody to use a real instrument?

Thanks in advance. Clive

Hi Clive,

It's not possible have the melody play Realtracks. This is because RTs are not individual notes but, rather, whole melodic phrases in audio file format. BIAB takes these phrases and works it's magic to create phrases of accompaniments. The quality of a MIDI melody is controlled by the quality of the synth. driving the playing.

Regards,
Noel

Something else to consider when asking about using an RT for the melody is the use of the program Melodyne. I just responded to Bandmooses thread about his rock opera demo and he used Melodyne to manipulate several RT's. So it is possible to do but it takes another program and some money.
