May I make a suggestion?

Obviously, none of us need to provide the city and state, country, etc. in our profiles and signatures.

But what’s wrong with giving a first name?

This is a small community, and it’s not like someone can steal your identity with a first name only. Most of the long time users who have “cryptic” screen names on here are known by their first names by most of the long time users.

For example, rockstar_not is Scott, curmudgeon is “the other Don”, ryszard is Richard, Silvertones is John, rharv is Bob, (and we have several Bob’s, but it’s all rharv’s fault, ), etc.

So I’m just curious for those who choose to not give their first names on a VERY small forum like this, as to the reasons why. For example, if your name is “Joe”, and you don’t provide the city or state of residence, then are you really in danger of identity theft?

So the simple suggestion is, may we please get on a first name basis? It’s easy to do in the preferences “edit” feature. It adds whatever you input to your signature.

It’s not a big deal, just something I thought I’d bring up. Leave it blank if you wish, or tell us your first name. I just hate typing out a 16 letter cryptic screen name in a response to “Joe” just because I don’t know his/her name is “Joe”. Plus, if people don’t even know your first name, they’re gonna be less likely to take time to type out a response to your question. Or maybe that’s just me!

Oh well, Happy Easter! May the rest of 2011 bring you good things and good music!

(By the way, my name is Bob in case you didn't catch it in the signature or screen name.)

I always use my first name in forum signatures. Can't see the harm in it.

I love the idea, as well as geographic location. Love to find out who is from northeast Ohio like I am.

Eddie,

I like seeing the geographic location also but I figure there are some who are paronoid about giving that along with their name, although with nothing more than a first name and location the risk is non-existent.

But to each his own. There's way more info out there about each of us than what some may realize.

Bob, anybody in the Cleveland/Akron area who is on here and sees my photo knows who I am and that is fine with me. As long as they bring instruments with them when they crash my door....

I can hardly wait until my upstairs conversion is done and the current studio, which is 2 halves of an upstairs, becomes one big open room.

I hope you all have a very blessed Easter!!!

Oddly enough, my cryptic user name is very similar to my real name! Steve Young. I live in Texas.

(If you decide to steal my identity, who knows, maybe you can improve my credit scores!)

Steve

Hi,

I believe it is very unwise to give out too much info about yourself on the net, and too much in my opinion may just be a pic and a first name. Over time the right scammer will find out the region where you live and it is possible if they wanted they could track you down or use info obtained to do other things. A pic may just be in your avatar region on posts such as on here.

It is no joke to be the victim of identity theft on the net, I have been and the scammer got it from an account I was using for net only, my bank account number and name. I believe it could have been an owner of a cashback website who set up direct debits in my name caused a lot of distress to me. I had to get the police involved and it’s no joke to wait for the postman wondering what other trick the scammer had pulled, setting up fake insurance policies etc, and the trouble of having to contact the companies involved.

That is why I believe it is very unwise to post your pic on the net along with your first name and the region where you live. I know lots do it in social networking sites but still an unwise thing to do.

Regards
Jan

In some way, "dcuny" is my identity - at least, in terms of the internet. Blame those Unix user names! So it gives some consistency from forum to forum - not necessarily a good idea, though...

I guess that's why I finally added a "real" signature to my name.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?
