I'm using Band in A box 2009.5. . I have learned to make good backup tracks. AWESOME! I have tried to add real guitar and vocals via my samson C01 usb condenser but it always sounds like a live recording with a stereo playing in the background. Is there a good way to blend these sounds? so that it sounds like you're in the same room ? I'm considering a device like this: http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Behringer-Guitar-Link-UCG102-USB-Interface?sku=241228it has mixed reviews but perhaps I could use a preamp with it.. Would I be better to import the track into Audacity and then record. thanks sincerely, Kirby

Use Real Band, i believe it was included in 2009. It should do the trick.

Kirby,
What you are experiencing is normal, making your recorded wave tracks "sit" in the overall mix. The USB mic should be set as a mono input device, if possible? Once you have captured your wave file, you can later duplicate it for a stereo field.
You should be recording without any effects enabled. Once you have captured your dry signal, you can then add effects in post editing. Using the same reverb settings on everything will also help "setup" the room sound.
It is harder to record effects live and have them match up with different effects in post edit. The rule of thumb is to record everything dry and then add in effects so the volume, effects and eq can be added and adjusted to taste.
It is easier to add to a mix then trying to remove an unwanted sound.

I think you should be able to get a decent recording with the USB mic. I know better mics, pre-amps and everything make some difference but I don't think enough to keep you from making a decent recording with a good balance. A couple of thoughts: 1. You might check whether add reverb is added on your Real Tracks in the Real Tracks preferences. If it is you might want to remove the check box to allow you to have more control. You can always add back reverb in Real Band. 2. The tracks you are going to mix together are going to be full and clear alone when you solo them. However together they may become muddy and not balanced well. EQ is what I am learning from some online courses that can help you get the vocal to sit well in the mix. Not the only thing but definitely the foundation upon which you build. You need to find the dominant frequencies for the vocal and make sure you don't have any other instruments "competing" for that same frequency. If you do add a slight cut in that area on that instrument. Basically you are trying to give each instrument it's dominant frequency in the mix, so you need to do similiar things with your Bass, guitars, keys etc. I have found that Joe Gilder at www.Homestudiocorner.com has some pretty good tips. The thing I like about him is he focuses more on the "how" you do it versus getting into the technical details right off the bat. Hope this helps along with the other suggestions. I know I have struggled with this for years and though I am better am making an effort to focus on the basic foundational stuff this year and try to get it down solid. With all the new toys, tools, and software it is always tempting to get so much stuff you just plain out cannot learn it all. Terry

Open Realband, then make sure your MIDI and Audio drivers are set to the same thing as BiaB uses. This is done in the Prefs area (big button in middle of screen) Once this is done, just open a BiaB song in RB and hit play. You'll see how it gets laid out. From there it is pretty intuitive; highlite a new blank track, plug in your input to the computer that you are using to record, and hit Record. You will record on a new track. RB puts everything right in front of you for audio. Look thru the Realband Tutorials listed here - http://www.pgmusic.com/howtos.htmThere should be a pdf file in your Realband folder that may help also. Then ask anything you need help with in the Realband Forum
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

I am going to try and make sure the settings are the same.
I think I'm getting it. only thing I'm frustrated with is: I worked out the song layout exactly like I wanted with tag endings etc.. but RB seems to convert the file to one big chorus. Can I import and have it stay the same ?
thanks guys and gals,
Kirby

I believe that's called unfolding. Is the RB file playing differently, or do you just want the old layout to work with? If so, RB is not for you. But know that you can put part markers in and note where choruses (andd verses and tags) are. So you can find them and jump to them, but it won't look like a BiaB file with choruses. It is now laid out in a linear fashion.
Curious as to whether the song actually plays different in RB, or just looks different, like you unfolded it in BiaB.

Yes it is just unfolded. but I can deal with that.. no big deal.
I do however wish there was an easy way to move bars. I think the BIAB has a standard 4 bar tag but RB has 5 bars on one line.. Again. No big deal.. it just be nice if the two programs were the same on the chords page. I may just print out a chord chart and re-enter everything.. seems the best way to get what you want.
thanks for the input.. very helpful.
