I completed an installation of a new DAW using the Windows 7 O/S which included anew Soundcard the Creative X-Fi and have had anumber of issues with the soundcard.
I have used a succession of Creative soundcards over the years, even predating the SB Live card, and found that recording Audio with PTW and now RealBand easy using the "What you Hear" method.
Previously, Creative have developed for the Games industry and paid lip service to Music creation. With the Creative X-Fi card, Creative have included a Music Mode complete with a full Mixing Desk for all audio & Midi inputs. In addition, the Recording Panel actually Records sound to a special folder and not to a DAW. For previous models, RealBand could record "What You Hear" without the need for Audio Input Drivers to be selected in the Audio Driver Panel. Now it is necessary to ensure that the appropriate Creative Audio Driver is selected "What you Hear" , Line In or Digital In otherwise a blank recording.
I would not normally use the ASIO driver as I do not record live, and therefore all the initial testing was with the MME drivers. Unfortunately, the recorded tracks were found to include spurious artifacts. Despite many attempts using varying settings, I have obtained few acceptable track recordings.
I decided to try out the ASIO driver and have been able to record via the soundcard without any problems. So I am up and running again.
If anyone can suggest possible parameter changes within RealBand's Audio Driver Panel which could sort out the clicks etc, I would be much obliged.

The buffer settings may need to be adjusted? I believe you can adjust those in the audio preferences. If they are too high, you will get spits, farts and pops usually.

If they are working, why go through the trouble of trying to go back to MME? This may be an instance of the ASIO drivers for this soundcard being written better than the MME ones.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

To Trax - thanks I will look at these again.
To Bob - Yes I can and do use the ASIO driver for recording, but use the MME drivers for mixing audio and the final stages. There is no problem with the Audio Out "Creative Speakers" but with the Audio In "What you Hear", "Line In" and "Digital". I have yet to stretch the ASIO as regards the number of tracks it can handle simultaneusly and may stay permanently with ASIO. There are two minor problems with ASIO - the driver does not like "Enable Input Monitoring" or "Allow IM Effects Recording" options to be checked. If they are then the ASIO driver emits a loud rustling noise which gradularly fades out, but is loud enough for one to dive for the volumn control and leaves a residual low level hum.
The Creative site shows a number of users having troubles with this soundcard, but the the current driver was developed last October and does not appear that it is going to be updated anytime soon. Anyway, I will start pestering Creative for some help!!!!!
Thank you for your comments.

I have changed various settings in the RealBand Audio Driver setup without success. Following up on a Post in the Creative Forum which indicated that the "What You Hear" driver is disabled by default in Windows 7. I opened the Control Panel > Hardware & Sound > Manage Audio Devices > Record and found that the information was correct and changed the setting to the make "What You Hear" the Default Input Driver. Whatever driver was actually used previously, I don't know, but this change was no more successful than any other.
I had reached the conclusion that this was a sampling problem and changed all the settings to 48K to test the theory. It worked - the Audio In Driver "What You Hear" actually records at 48K. I now have two options to either use MME drivers at 48K or change back to 44.1K and use the ASIO driver which does work at this rate. At least the problem is solved.

Creative cards do have this quirk, since they operate at 48 natively (most of them). Remember now that BiaB works at 16/44. So going back and forth may make a difference.
I usually don't go back to BiaB once I'm in RB. But if I do I'm usually going back far enough in the song structure that the recorded tracks no longer really matter. Glad you figured it out, and thanks for reminding us of this quirk. Maybe we'll suggest it sooner next time!
