Up until now I have only been using Realband to play midifiles. Today I thought I would load a couple of the BB demo tunes and see what I could do with them in Realband. So I loaded the demo tune -Galoway from the BB folder, in BB the melody plays as a Muted Trumpet (60) and in Realband it plays as a Vibraphone (12). I'm using my GM2 keyboard as the sound source, but this is playing the correct patch numbers as displayed in each program i.e. 60 and 12.

Secondly, the Real Drums play noticeably quieter in Real band than BB.

Have I got something setup incorrectly ?

You happened to have picked an odd song. It through me at first. The melody of that song and maybe others defaults to the last melody instrument that was up there from a previous song. The reason being is there's not program change # assigned to that part.
Kind of weird.Try some other song.

Glen,

You probably have the Peak Limit enabled in Biab via the audio preferences (DX Effects). The Peak Limit will boost the Real Tracks like a compressor.

You can use the Event List in RB to set the patches. Make sure to have the correct midi channel set up for EACH track/channel in RB, as well as patch list.

John, Trax

Many thanks for helping me out with this one.

John, You were right, I didn't think to look at the possibility of a song not having a patch change number !!

Trax, The Peak Limit item was enabled, I assume this is the default as I have never touched it. Unticking the box didn't make a great deal of difference to the volume, but I did notice a Master Volume slider just under the red Record button in Realband, this was turned down slightly (again by default I assume). When moved fully right, both drum volumes are now roughly the same.

Thanks again guys, much appreciated.

Glen

Also, remember that BIAB is designed to give you a band accompaniment, and is optomized for that.

RealTracks gives you full control over the each track, and so there is some tweaking you will need to do to get the sound you want. Also, as you have seen, any differences in effects will obviously change the sound between the two.

There are things that BIAB does that RealBand doesn't, so it won't always sound the same. For example, BIAB has the embellisher feature that RealBand doesn't have. So unless you made the embellishments permanent, they won't come over when you just load the file into RealBand.

Also, RealBand will re-generate the tracks, so it may not sound exactly like the last time you generated the tracks in BIAB. If you want to get closer to the BIAB sound, you might want to consider freezing the tracks in BIAB, and then dragging and dropping them onto RealBand.

Just a couple of differences between the two.

That being said, once in RealBand, you have full control over the sound, to include the ability to map each track to a completely different synth, as well as to convert all the MIDI tracks to audio tracks and apply whatever effects you want on a track-by-track basis.

John,

Many thanks for your comments.

As you say these are two different programs with different uses, its very easy (wrongly) to think they should have the same function.
