Hi all,
I just got my first Android-based SmartPhone and since I knew that some beta testing of an Android version had taken place I entered the Market and sure enough, there it was.
So I bought it and installed it, but I just can't get it to connect to my Biab 2011 on my desktop pc. I've tried following the same instructions as for the iPhone version in the "What's new in BiaB 2011" pdf, but all I get is "Attempt to connect to host timed out. No BiaB server is responding. Check IP, Firewall or router settings"
The desktop PC is connected to the router via cabel and the Android is obviously WiFi-connected to the same router and I've checked that they are both on the same IP subnet 192.168.1.x and I do try to connect to the IP-address directly. I've tried disabling the Firewall (McAfee) on the desktop and with that done I can ping both ways succesfully between the desktop and the SmartPhone, but still no connection with BiaB.
Any ideas anyone ?
My Desktop is running Windows 7 64bit and my BiaB is 2011 build 317.
Best regards Ole

Mines running fine (Google phone Android 2.3.4) at home, but not outside. But I'm 8 hours from home in the bush and the blackflies are bad and I want to sweep the chimney in the cabin.
Support should be able to help. They get to work about when you go to bed.

Well I've got the local connection working now - not thanks to documentation, but to my own registry-crawling.
I even realised, that to get this to work, I needed to install Apple QuickTime !! GGGrrrrr - THAT goes against my grain: Install Apple software to get Windows/Android to work ?
The really interresting part of this would be to get the Internet part working, but that seems impossible for now. The LAN part I could do just as well with a USB cable.
What am I missing ??

You have to set up the port forwarding part, and get it right. And the permissions depending on your version of Windows.
What format would you use? Problem is codecs and who will let you play. I suspect because they made a hybrid app using the apple store they got the use of the codec for free. Not so easy with mp3 formats.
I have been using dropbox to move stuff from my tablet to computer and versy vicey. But now that I've got the google phone I'm going to put that on there too.
And I've been using dropbox for both the jpeg of the melody, and the mp3 I made of same, though no roll yer own.
I'm now messing with a script to translate the apple format to mp3 and stuff it in the dropbox at the drop of a hat.

I also bought and installed BIAB for Android (v2.2) to be disappointed.
Just the same as SteelPlayer, the connection is not made between the PC within a same LAN segment.
Do I need any setting on my BIAB 2011(build 317) on PC? How can I setup the PASSWORD to connect?
And, do I need QuickTime for this business? Oh my Buddha! I hate Quicktime and don't want to install it.

Hi Mitz,
1. You need to have the c:\bb\bbhelper\BandInABoxServer.exe program running. You can do this by installing it from the BB program (menu Windows-BBToGo and then press the button to install and run the server program).
When it is running, you'll see a "note" icon in the system tray. If you don't see a note icon, then it is not running. The password is admin, and you can change it from the BB Server program (right click on the note icon and press options).
Then the Android app will see the server, and you can connect.
2. Yes, you need QuickTime for Windows installed. This is so that mp4 files can be made.
Have Fun! Peter Gannon PG Music Inc.

In addition to Peter's advice, if you're using a home network, don't forget what John says about port forwarding. Here's a quote from elsewhere, based on BB running under Win7x64 with a Linksys router: "The need for a static IP *does* in fact apply, but it refers to the LAN IP not the WAN IP. After configuring the NIC in my computer for a static IP - important: it has to be *outside* the range set in the router interface for its DHCP - and doing the port forwarding on only that static IP, I've had no problem connecting the app to the BB2Go server on my computer. Contrary to some things you may find in old discussions on the net, the Linksys router does permit simultaneous static and DHCP IP assignments for multiple computers on the LAN." Hope that helps. Or at least doesn't hurt -Ron

Thank you very much Peter-san for the important information.
I successfully started bandinaboxserver.exe and made Android connected. However, the sound obtaind at the Android was very bad (noisy). There seems to be something to be adjusted.
And also thank you rk1122 for the forwarding information. But what is the port number for BandInABoxserver to redirect?

Good question. Without the answer, you can't do any of this! Sorry bout the technobabble, I'd assumed the same instructions that were provided to testers would have been in the public release. Here's a longer quote, from an authoritative source, and to which my previous post was originally intended as a postscript:
"If you have a router, and you want to connect to your computer from the "outside world", you will need to configure a port forwarding rule on your router.
To do this:
1. Log on to your router. Typically, you access your router by typing an IP address into your web browser. Different manufacturers use different default IP addresses - for example, dlink typically uses 192.168.0.1, and linksys typically uses 192.168.1.1.
2. Once you are logged in, find the port forwarding settings. Again, this varies with different manufacturers, but in general: -For dlink routers, you should find it by clicking the Advanced tab along the top, and then clicking Port Forwarding menu item on the left side. -For linksys routers, you may find it under the 'Applications and Gaming' tab along the top. -For Siemens routers, you may find it under Internet | Address Translation.
3. Forward the following ports to your computer. You can find out your computer's IP address by looking at Band-in-a-Box Server:
Port 6789 TCP Port 6790 UDP
4. Now you need to know your router's public IP address. This is the IP address that the world sees, i.e. the Gateway to your LAN. You can find out by looking in the router settings (e.g. the Status tab on dlink routers), or by clicking the Find My IP button in the BB2GO dialog."
Note also that if your modem is connected to your ISP by DHCP (as most are), and the lease expires - ie. your IP address is changed by the ISP - the connection to the BB2Go server will be interrupted. However, I'm informed this is a minor issue, as the lease periods are usually very long (months).
Again, hope this helps, and sorry for confusion of previous post. -Ron

Thank you rkl122 and sorry for my late reply.
I found the port number 6789 by capturing the packet with wireshark and also found it in some message from "BIAB for android".
Last week, I intensively challenged on BIAB for Android and found :
1) smart count-in does not work on Android while it was set on works on PC. 2) BIAB for android saves each BIAB files on SD card but saves only one (last) mp4 file rendered by PC. 3) There is no indication of "which chorus playing now". 4) There is no conductor mode on BIAB for android.
Is 1) a easy mistake?
If 2) is available, BIAB for Android can behave actually as "Stand Alone BIAB". 3) and 4) are just "want to have".
Thank you very much.
Regards

I've spent several hours today trying to connect BIAB pc server to my ios devices when NOT on same network. Same network works fine. Even got in an online port forwarding expert who couldn't make it work. BIAB haven't been able to do much yet either. If anyone figures this out, I'd love to know the secret. --edit-- sorry just realised this is an android discussion but just as frustrating
