Hello Folks, Sorry to have so many questions. Here's a beautiful rendition of an Eric Johnson piano ballad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKI5D-Jh7owA pianist and I transcribed it and I imported it as Midi (1). The result is stiff sounding, I'm guessing as a result of the complete mathematical nature of Midi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZfMXQ6eZxQAre there any settings that could make this piece sound closer to the original or at least better. First of all, I think I have BIIB set to use Coyote Synth (Windows 7), but the piano just sounds like plain ol Windows synth. Wonder how I could get a better instrument sound? Also, wondering if RealTracks or Styles can be set up to get closer to the original feel? Apologies again., I'm really a beginner and am not sure how this works when notation and midi are involved (only when starting with manual chord entry). Many Thanks, Jon

Jon, wonderful examples and well done with the trnascription.
Real Tracks will not help us here since they do not play the midi notes, however, there is a good chance that a better synth then the Coyote Soft Syn (which uses the same MS sounds) could improve the sound quality. Why don't you upload the BIAB file ans ask folks to try alternates and post the results.

Did you hand anotate all the entries for the midi file or was it played from a keyboard. Playing from a midi keyboard would allow all the CC's to capture expresson which is difficult to convey in the hand annotated text. Does that make sense?
So while we can and should use the best synth to create the best piano sound, I am afraid the "expression" is only as good as the notes on the paper.

Hi Dan,
Trying to upload the file right now, but don't see an attachment button or a files section in the forum. Please advise on that.
Great idea and the pianist could do that, but she isn't anywhere near a computer. My piano skills are not there yet.
Will upload as soon as I can.
Kind Regards,
Jon

you have to insert a link to the file stored on an external server (just like the prior links you provided). If you don't have access to server space, email the file to me and I will put in on my webserver and provide the link here in the forum.

Dave, So this is Eric Johnson the guitarist on an instrumental piano piece, cool - I never heard this.
BIAB is likely not the best vehicle for working out this piece. Since it is piano only I see you have disabled the styles which I agree don't really help to simulate Erics solo piano version. So the best you can do with this is hook up the best sound generator available.
Tomorrow I will render to wav a couple versions based on different sound sources and upload to this thread. Maybe some other folks will chime in.

The addition of CC’s will help, as been already suggested. The stiffness may also be helped with midi resolution. BiaB is only 120 PPQ, not enough IMHO. I would bring the midi file into RB or another DAW, set the midi resolution to 960 PPQ and adjust some of the notes + or – a few ticks. If your DAW does not have randomization then check out hitsquad.com and look for a free randomization VST.
Good luck!
OK, a random thought; Why does toilet paper need a commercial? Who's not buying it?
64 bit Win 10 Pro, the latest BiaB/RB, Roland Octa-Capture audio interface, a ton of software/hardware

Some experimentation with BB's Melody Embellisher might help a little.

Well only so much can be done with direct sheet music to midi - I am not able to add CC to enhanse expression (..don't know how to do that). And as a solo piano piece which is trying to simulate the original I don't see much use for BIAB since no need to add accompianment (althought this would be a interesting challange under other circumstances). Nevertheless, I suspect the best way for this would be to have someone actually play this music on a midi keyboard with all the CC controls. So what can be done to improve upon the sound of the file that was supplied. Here are several different sound players which I happen to have, perhaps you have better. Example 1 : BIAB Coyote Wave Table (From Daves mp3 on youtube) Example 2 : ?? Example 3 : ?? Example 4 : ?? Do you hear any difference? Some folks can drink cheap whisky and some need the expensive stuff. Depends on how discriminating your taste. Same goes with your ears. PM me if you need me to fill in the blanks. Otherwise, you be the judge of some simple adjustments with different synths.
