My wish: It would be nice to have more jazz Realdrums with a simpler, more subtle sound. Think Herbie Hancock's "Dolphin Dance", Miles tunes on "Kind of Blue".

Agree 100%. Terry Clarke is a fine drummer, but so many of his RT's are very splashy (ie with lots of crash-cymbal and sizzle, especially in pre- and post-fills). Many are also very heavy/rocky, despite being labelled 'jazz'.

To mention one name: Bill Stewart. if Terry or your other easily-available drummers were to listen to some Bill Stewart and produce a set of RTs using his spare, but super-funky rhythmic patterns, it would be so useful.

Notably: Bill Stewart's trade-mark is maybe super-funky, ever-varying patterns on the Ride cymbal where all you can really hear is the stick-tip on the Ride, with minimal splash or sizzle, and occasional punctuation on the rest of the kit.

With so many new RT's, maybe now's the time for some new modern-jazz RD's ?

Thanks to All.

Thanks for your support Matt.

I guess you and the other esteemed Vets have considerable influence ?

Can you recall when the last RD set was added (at least two years ago ?) and how many RT's have been added since then ?

No more or less influence than anyone else here.

Some RealDrums have been added all along. I examined the files.

Those that have been added in 2011 or 2011.5 are:

Bodhran (4 of those)
Gypsy Jazz (3)
Jazz Funk (2)
Pop American
Pop Rock Waltz (6)
Praise Worship (4)
Reggae (2)
Tex Mex (2)

I may have missed a few...

Almost all of the jazz files were recorded from 2007 - 2009. Clearly, a huge push was done in 2010.5 a year ago with many dozens of revisions to jazz drum .TXT files, so it's not correct to say nothing has been done in two years. I guess this summer RealDrums weren't as high a priority, but give them time and keep the specific suggestions coming. The way the OP, jazzman60, did it was perfect: he gave a specific reference to hear.

Hi Matt - You're quite right, of course: a lot more RDs have been included within the new RT's. I was thinking of the RD-only sets - which seem to have been stuck on 29 for some time.

In terms of giving specific references: I mentioned Bill Stewart, as a modern jazz drummer with a distinctive spare & funky style, in many different small groups, who the BIAB-regular jazz drummers (Terry Clarke, Ricky Lawson, Craig Scott) are certain to be familiar with.

I could also have mentioned Jeff Ballard, Antonio Sanchez, Clarence Penn, Mark Ferber, perhaps - all of whom are also well-known masters of modern spare-and-funky in a small -group setting.

I was imagining it would be straight-forward for one of these three - or another experienced jazz drummer available to BIAB - to lay down a variety of tracks (EV8, EV16, swing, latin; different tempos; sticks & brushes; different bits of the kit etc), all with a spare Bill Stewart-esque small-group style.

Do you think it would be easier for BIAB if I mentioned some specific tracks (as did jazzman60) rather than specific drummers ? (I thought that would be harder - given the need to find the tracks).

Thanks again Matt - Best - Andy

Yes, I recall in the past PG Music said they liked specific tracks cited. If they can't find a track, they can always let you know.

The best drummers with whom I have worked are more on the "heavy" side, like Danny Gottlieb, Kim Plainfield and Joel Rosenblatt, but for "spare" I really liked Jack DeJohnnette.

Interesting to hear Jack DeJohnette referred to as a 'spare' sounding drummer; but then I guess he can do just about any style you care to name.

Another I could name is Pete Erskine, someone who combines simplicity and subtlety in equal measure. Listen to any of the trio albums with John Abercrombie and Marc Johnson to see just how much of a sense of 'power held in reserve' he conveys at the kit.

Alan, you're right of course. Jack DeJohnette's playing is typically not 'spare', but he can play that way and did when I played with him in a small club back in the 70's. I just think other top-flight drummers with whom I have worked are more likely to overpower a small room.

I love Peter Erskine's playing, too, on all the recordings I have of him. Keyvn Lettau's CDs are a fine example. Good call.

Hi Alan & Matt

One example of wonderful spare Jack DeJohnette would be on Whisper Not, with Keith Jarrett & Gary Peacock (1999, post Jarrett's battle with ME).

eg:
- superb, non-splashy, intricate-ride-pattern fast swing on What is this Thing Called Love
- lovely funky spare sticks (not the usual brushes) on Round Midnight
- fantastic latin A and B sub-styles (in PG language) on Poinciana.

Now if the PG drummers could knock out some RD WAV's like those.... !!

Best - Andy
