A few questions but all along the same line....
I know that mp3s have tags, or you can create tags fo them, or edit them etc..., but is there a way to tag the songs that you put on your own music cd? Or at the very least, if the songs can't be tagged, is there a way to to tag the cd itself?
Also I was wondering about having the cd bar coded as certain places like cd baby and pandora require this. Has anyone done this? Does the Bar code contain the song information?
Thanks K

The bar code does not contain the information for individual tracks; the bar code is for the CD product itself. The individual songs have their own numbers, but they are not tagged in the file itself. A good start for the info on this process is Oasis or Discmakers.

Switch can tag .wav, mp3, any format that it can use with... Song Title Artist Info Album Info Genre Track Number Year And some brief comment This information stays with the audio file until it is removed, so when you burn it to CD or convert to a different format the Tag will stay with your song. My version of Switch Pro is 1.7, and this is how this version works, I am not sure if the newer versions changed anything...

Kirsten - no to all your questions.
The information on tracks, artists, etc. is not actually encoded on the CD, but it is attached to a unique code for the CD - but held in a database in cyberworld.
This doesn't mean that when you put a CD up at CDBaby, even with a bar code, that information is included in the big database in the net.
My sister just released a CD, now for sale at CDBaby, with a bar-code, and her artist info and so forth is not in the giant database as of yet.
I agree that Discmakers is probably the best place to ask this question. I believe the CDDB is the 'master' that most of the various software that tags files references.

Yes, Scott has now taken my answer one step farther. It is possible for you to upload the codes to CDDB. iTunes is one software that can do it. There are others. If I recall correctly, I received the codes through Oasis as part of the manufacturing process, but that may be incorrect (it's been five years, and there was a lot to do to prepare the CD for all commercial requirements). Oasis and Discmakers are basically merged now, I believe.

The answer is yes to this part, not no. You can absolutely tag your tracks before burning to a CD or uploading to a site. This is why when you backup a CD you bought you will sometimes get the names & titles without going on line, it is imbedded into the track itself.
And yes, I am talking about manufactured CD's, not a friends version....
You can also upload your own data for your own CD to the CDDB using CDex, and even help update it by filling in the blanks when it does not have the info!

What software would do this?

Switch is the one I use, tho it is an older version like I mention in my previous post. There is a lot of software that can tag a file, I just use this one because I found it the easiest one to use. There is a free version on the site, you just have to look around for it. It USE to allow tagging, but who knows if the free version still does!

@jcspro - that's only if you are using a CD that is not to Red Book CD standards. A typical audio CD does not have song titles embedded; only CDs that go beyond the Red Book standard. CD-Text is the format; but it is by no means the standard audio CD.
Back to Kirsten's question - the reason that retailers want the typical UPC bar code is for inventory and point-of-sale tracking / shipping / etc. They really don't care if your lyrics are included or not with your CD.
Now, they do want to be your file download distributor of choice - so there will be a need for tagged files in that regard.
Regarding tagging: no need to buy any special software for that. You can use Windows Explorer to tag files. You can even 'batch' the tagging process by highlighting all the files in a folder, right click for 'properties', click on the 'Summary' tab and enter in Artist and Album information, year, etc. Then you can do the track name on the individual tracks.
Also, Windows Media Player lets you do this in the 'library' function.
I'm referring to Windows XP SP3 (what I'm currently running) and WMP 10.

rockstar_not , please read This Page. It is an extension of the Red Book Standard. and I have store bought CD's that use it, even tho... "Support for CD-Text is common, but not universal" This was the easiest explanation I found, tho there are others that state the same thing. Now I am NOT being argumentative, the original poster asked if it could be done, not if it was approved to Red Book standard, and that is what I was addressing. If the OP goes with Disk Makers, or any of the commercial disk manufactures, they will of course handle all of this. And WMP does a good job of tagging tracks for free, I just mention the software I use because I am most familiar with it. Anyhoo, I hope this clears up my comments!

Good discussion here.
I'm always a little concerned when someone wants to add CD text, because it makes the CD unreadable in many older CD players. No question, it's the way to go for the future, assuming CDs have a future.

I agree Matt, is has been a good thread! As for the future of the CD.....a few of us were talking about how much the music industry has changed in the last 5 - 10 years, and how a lot of the ways we used to sell & promote have drastically changed. The biggest part of that discussion was about compressed formats like mp3, ogg, Dvix, etc and how this generation freaks when they are confronted with uncompressed media. More than once we had heard that "something didn't sound right" when playing a .wav file of a song they have heard a ton of times before.... And if I did not derail this thread enough, you can go HERE to grab a copy of 10 Licensing Tips from Disc Makers....it's a good read. You can also hit THIS PAGE to order a lot of good, free information guides. OK, enough of that....sorry for the side-track!

I know what CD-Text is; which is why I, and rharv earlier in the thread, pointed it out. The Wikipedia page does a good job explaining it and other CD formats.
Just trying to make sure that the readers of this forum understand that tagging .wav files to be burned onto a typical audio-format CD is a waste of time in general.
Now, that's not true for files in your computer's library, or if you have the means to upload to CDDB.
It's questionable whether most user's CD Burning software has the ability to write the CD-Text. Most of the entry-level burning programs do not support writing CD-Text.
That's also not going to be the way that a disc publishing company encodes the data - which gets back to Kirsten's original question.

Ok. so how does this sound....
In general when making a "physical cd" for sale (cd baby, store , ...whatever ...) just get upc code for the "product" (cd). If selling your music as mps files, just use whatever tagging software you prefer (so people can play them in their mp3 players)

There is more required for selling your CDs than just the barcode. Each track needs a unique number. That's how they keep track of playlists and royalties. Tagging a track so people know who the artist is etc. is different.

Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!
Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.
Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
