I just recently discovered the 'pitch to midi conversion' function in RB. Very cool PGMusic! This is something I've wanted for a long time and there it was already.

I recorded a bass line and ran the function on it and the results were promising. The first half of the recording was converted quite accurately. The second half started to degenerate, however, with the engine detecting spurious notes and mis-interperting others. I'm certain that with a bit of tweaking I can get the engine to work sufficiently for what I want.

However, I wonder if any of you can offer some suggestions for preparing the audio track so it has the greatest chance of success? Is there any combination of EQ and FX, such as compression, filtering etc., that would make it easier for the conversion algorithm to be more accurate?

Experiment with hi-pass and low-pass EQ filtering. Try to get rid of any rumble or clicks. The cleaner the pitch, the better the conversion.

I've only ever used, or tried to use, it on a vocal track to midi-fy the melody line.
Always found it overly sensitive, and suspect my voice may not be melodic enough.

If anything, as rharv indicates, you need to lessen its sensitivity.
But the cleaner the audio track the better.

The point of the hi and lo pass filters is to clean up the signal. An 'S' can give a pitch to a software program, and so can something ringing in a bass, bumping a mic stand, any extra sound is considered (it would have to be since a violin may need a frequency that contrabass may not) ... An expander may help too, to keep unintentional noise supressed. Depends on the track.

Thanks rharv. I have used hi and low pass filtering before and you are right, it should help some. I will try that suggestion.

I'm also wondering about tone. Does this have any effect on the results? If so, is it better to go more bassy or more trebly?

I also wonder if an expander might reduce the level of 'space' between notes and thus make the track detection more accurate?

I should also cut my fingernails. I did notice the detection algorithm picked up on those little 'clicks' as my nails hit the strings. lol

I was also thinking of trying to 'sing' in the melody to a couple of songs. Knowing my voice however, this could be an exercise in frustration.

Cleaner as in less background noise? Or do you mean in terms of actual playing? If the latter I'm out of luck. The track I tried it on is played about as good as I'll ever do. And that's not all that good. Geddy Lee doesn't need to worry about the competition from me. lol

I should have read all the posts first. I asked about using an expander above and here you already mentioned it. This is something I'll try ASAP. Any parameter settings you could recommend or is it pretty much a 'try it and see' situation?

Every track will be different as far as the expander.

As far as singing the melody into the conversion - it's been recommended - doo-doo da-da etc would work better than words . . . but I haven't it yet.

PS Or sing the words and then do a pitch correction. Whatever gives the best melodic results for the conversion to identify. Let me know how it works out.

I have tried a number of pitch to midi demos/programs and none of them are perfect. A perfect straight tone, no vibrato or effects of any kind and on key, works the best. Even though still plan on spending a lot of time editing. It can be done with some work though.


I got banned from Weight Watchers for dropping a bag of M&Ms on the floor.
It was the best game of Hungry Hippos I've ever seen!
