Does anyone know where to find more info about the 'Run other program' menu selection? There's nothing in the help file. I'd like to find out what parameters, if any, are sent to the application being executed. This would allow me to write my own applications that would respond to such things as the current style and song etc.

If there are no parameters sent then I'll add this to the wishlist.

Hi, Paul -

From the Help Menu (found in the GM Menu section), it has:

================================================

Run Other Program

This is a submenu to run other applications and plug-ins, such as the Windows mixer.

Sound card Volume / Playback VU Meter launches the Windows mixer to adjust volumes on your sound card with the Playback panel.

Sound card Recording / Recording VU Meter launches the Windows Mixer to adjust volumes on your sound card with the Recording panel.

Note: This uses the c:\windows\sndvol32.exe Mixer program. You may need to have the Windows 98 version of this program for the Recording Panel to open properly. If you don't, you'd see the "Volume Control" panel and will have to manually set it to the Recording Panel (by choosing Options | Properties | Recording).

Sound Blaster AWE Control Panel applies only to users with a Sound Blaster. This function launches the "AWE Control" application (listed in \windows\sbwin.ini under the AWECONTROL section). The applet launched allows you to load in sound fonts. An example use of loading in a sound font (for AWE32) would be to load in the GS sound font, and thereby get brushes on drums available.

Sound Blaster Mixer is also for Sound Blaster users only, and launches the mixer for volumes.

Run Windows Control Panel… runs the Windows Control Panel, which lets you examine MIDI and Audio settings in the Multimedia, Add New Hardware, and System panels.

Run Other Application… and Choose (Other Application…) allows you to specify and run any other application (mixer application, PowerTracks etc.).

Run DLL or &EXE plug-in… and Choose DLL or EXE Plug-in… allows you to run a plug-in that has been made specifically for a PG Music product. If you would like technical information on how to make such a plug-in see the PowerTracks documentation files. (EXEDEMO.ZIP is source code in Delphi, and PTWDLL.TXT describes the plug-ins).

===================================

I don't know if this helps. I just tested it on my computer by asking BIAB to load a text editor I like using. It worked fine, but was a little slow to load. I generally just use the Windows task bar to these kinds of things now.

Oh yes, that helps a lot. I searched the help files but didn't see that.

Interestingly, I use Delphi for writing my own applications. So those files should be exactly what I'm looking for. That seems to indicate that at least some of PGMusic's apps are written in Delphi. Great choice IMHO.

I think I remember some time back that Peter indicated that BIAB was written in Delphi.

Going even further back, I thought I read that the original versions were in Pascal. Could be wrong, although porting to Delphi would have been a lot easier from Pascal than from some other languages.

ba-BOOM!
(heh heh...good one... didn't see it coming!)

regarding the sending of parameters to external programs:
the easiest way to accomplish that is to put the entire command line + parameters in a batch file, then execute the batch file as the external program.

An application for this idea that might be useful with BIAB might be to set up various command line configs for the LAME encoder to create a variety of different types of MP3

Well, since Delphi is essentially Object Pascal on steroids, that makes sense.

Yep. But we would need The Oracle to settle this.
