I spend a bunch of time today trying to separate out the left and right stereo tracks. Most of that time waa spend in Mixcraft. I could separate them out fine, but couldn't get a new recording. Decided to try RB and it was very easy. I have a bunch of playalong cds and the melody is on the right track. I wanted to just use the left track and/or reduce the volume on the right track. RB to the rescue. This is a very powerful program!

Yes it is. I've said it many times. Some other programs do things RB can't, but RB sure does a lot, and also does some things the others can't touch. Never count it out until you try it.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

Stan, in Mixcraft, supposedly you do the following:
"You can already work with the individual channels of a stereo sound. Just right-click on it, select Channels and then choose the channel you want to work with. You could duplicate the same sound on different tracks, select the right channel for one track and left channel for the other or whatever. "
I don't have it myself, but I do haunt their forums. Mixcraft is closest to the marriage I'm looking for between PTPA/RB and Tracktion.

In RB It's "Track - Split stereo track to two mono tracks"
Then mute one, center the other for Stan's example.
Or you could select the left side of a stereo track in the audio edit window, make changes, then select right side and make changes. It's a dropdown in the audio edit window.
Seems easiest to just split them out to seperate tracks, to me anyway. So you can use easily other FX on them if desired.

Well, that didn't work for me. RB was a lot easier.

OK - just trying to help since you paid at least $79 for Mixcraft. If that isn't an actual feature, I would be disappointed as well. Splitting stereo tracks is pretty common.

Thanks, rockstar-not. Sorry if my reply was a little blunt. Yes, I did pay for it. I can import the mp3 file and split the tracks. I can play each track individually, However, when I hit the Record button, nothing get's recorded to a new track. Maybe it's due to my setup using a Roland UA-4fx which I need for my Ketron SD2. However, I've been able to record and save other edited mp3 files in the past so I'm not sure about it now. I guess I could go to their user support forum and ask there. The purpose of my post was just to point out this feature in RB. I guess I was just pleasantly surprised that it's in RB.
I had been using WavePad for a few years, but Mixcraft has a lot more features and still isn't to complicated for a relative novice to learn. If I'm in a hurry, I still use Wavepad. I'm a little ticked at NCH Software though since I had paid for the master copy upgrade and then had to pay again when I went from XP to Win 7. I had also bought some of their other products that I didn't upgrade. I'm willing to pay for software, but I think their prices are pretty steep for what you get. Not sure about now, but you used to have to pay for support questions also.FWIW stan

I guess I don't understand what this last sentence means. What does hitting record have to do with changing the gain of a channel in a track?
Most DAW software doesn't require that you do gain change with destructive editing or re-recording a track just to 'lock in' the new gain. Even with PG products, while in the old days you had to apply a destructive gain change, these days you don't have to with automation controls.
Can't you just change the gain of one of the channels and leave it at that?

Thanks. What I wanted to do was just save a new file with the left track on it. Your way does sound easier. I think I'll do a "save as" first just to be safe and then make the edit changes. For whatever reason, I thought I was supposed to save all on a new track. I'll give your way a try. Thanks for helping out this neophyte.
Stan
Nah. Didn't work for me so it was back to RB. Thanks, anyway.

Definite mark against Mixcraft then, in my book. I thought I would be staring a new DAW choice in the face with Win7 but good old Tracktion cranks away in it as far as I can tell.

@-Scott.
Please remember that I'm a rookie with daw's so my comments may not be accurate due to my inexperience. I went to the Acoustica forum and registered, and posted the question. The answer was to pan the left channel all the way to the left before rendering. This worked and I do have an mp3 of just the left channel now. However, I still like RB better because I can see and edit both channels at once and then just do a merge/combine without having to generate a new track. In Mixcraft, you can chose the channel, but then that's the only channel that's visible in a track. I didn't try adding the mp3 file again so that I might be able to then have both the left and right tracks visible to edit.
Before I bought Mixcraft, Robh and others suggested that I try to find features that I need in RB before wasting money on another daw. They were right. Still, I like to play with new stuff so I don't consider my purchase a waste. I'm looking forward to learning how to use the effects. I think Tracktion was one that others recommended also. Not sure why I didn't get that one, but I think that it had been changed to something new.
I'm a little off topic here, but you may find that RB has all the DAW features that you may need. As Robh notes, the investment is not only the money but the time also. FWIW
