This song came about after reading a poem by Carol Wimmer. Getting her permission, I rewrote the poem, adding some of my lyrics so it would fit this song. An old friend from this forum, OCC sang the harmony for me. Enjoy!

When I Say I'm A Christian
Copyright 2011 By Marty Wittmann

When I say 'I am a Christian', I don't speak of this with pride.
I'm confessing that I stumble and need Christ to be my guide.
I'm not bragging of success. I'm admitting I have failed
But By the grace of God , in his arms I'm held

When I say 'I am a Christian', I'm not trying to be strong.
I'm professing that I'm weak and need His strength to carry on.
I have my share of heartaches, I feel the sting of pain
But he always takes the hurt away, when I call upon his name.

Chorus:
When I say 'I am a Christian', I'm not holier than thou .
I'm just a simple sinner, who received God's grace, somehow!
And in this life I don't deserve what GOD has given me
He shed his blood so I could live when he died on Calvary

When I say 'I am a Christian', I'm not claiming to be perfect.
My flaws are far too visible, but he still thinks I'm worth it.
An if it wern't for GOD's good grace, how lost I would be
When I say I'm a Christian, it means I've been set free!

Chorus:
When I say 'I am a Christian', I'm not holier than thou .
I'm just a simple sinner, who received God's grace, somehow!
And in this life I don't deserve what GOD has given me
He shed his blood so I could live when he died on Calvary

Chorus:
When I say 'I am a Christian', I'm not holier than thou .
I'm just a simple sinner, who received God's grace, somehow!
And in this life I don't deserve what GOD has given me
He shed his blood so I could live when he died on Calvary

Hi Noel,
Thanks for the listen. I really had fun with this song. It was so different that the usual genre I write in. It was great working with others to accomplish this song.

Hi Marty,

As usual you have a great sound and the song itself has a wonderful feel to it.

A nice Gospel feel with a hint of a slow version of "By And By".

My only reservation, and it is a personal one, is I feel it would lift more if the chorus melody came away from the verse melody.

As there is no key change or noticable melody change it seems a little flat.

A nice song still.

Martin

Bill Gaither is one of my musical influences, and I think the way the vocals blend on your song sounds like the Gaithers! So pleasing! Thank You

You can come sing that at my church anytime you want. Some of the folks probably even need to hear it.

Very nice, and the harmonies were excellent.

Hi Marty, not sure why, but was only allowed to hear 20 seconds of the song. Sounded interesting though.

Hi Marty, I registered with soundclick and can now access the full song (if I don't log in, I only get a 20 second preview of the song). Very nice work, sir--especially like the vocal harmonies. Kudos!
