Hi,
I exported RealDrums to Midi as I wanted to do some mouse editing customization in Reaper or Sonar. I was surprised to see that the midi events were completely quantized. I was surprised.
Are the RealDrum audio files also quantized? Not sure how that could be but I had to ask.
If not, is there a way to export an 'unquantized' file.

Can't export RDs as MIDI. No RDs are not quantized nor can they be.

How did you export the RealDrums to MIDI. They are audio files, not MIDI, and unlike RealTracks, do not have the associated notation.
If you meant RealTracks instead of RealDrums, well, then yes, most of them have notation associated with them. But it is just that - notation. It is not a performance MIDI, just the notes being played. The notation does not reflect pitch bends, velocity differences, style differences, etc. It's there so that you can follow along and learn.
Again, if it was RealDRUMS, then I'm not sure what you did to make them MIDI, because they are not. If you happened to pull an underlying MIDI drum part from the style (because the RealDrums overlay a number of MIDI drum parts which already exist in the style), then what you got has nothing to do with the RealDrum part that you hear.

Thank you both for your replies. Quote:

I was in midi export and went to options and found this:

If you look at the last two items, I used those. Unfortunately where it describes this window in the help files, it doesn't mention where those midi drums come from or how they're generated. So I thought it could have been from some sort of audio to midi type software that BIAB may have used to create midi files for all the real drums... that would have been really cool.
But you are right, I compared the midi to the RealDrums and they are not the same.
What I'm up to... I was hoping to edit the RealDrums to make it fit my tunes better. BIAB to me for using as a composition tool, is like a multiple-choice test as opposed to an essay test. You don't have to come up with the details yourself. If I hear a specific drum part in my head, I was hoping to get real close to it by editing the drum track. That's what I've done with good midi drum loops - loops played by a real drummer that are not quantized. Like with Cakewalks Session Drummer 2.
Do you have any suggestions? I know I could buy some audio to midi software, but am hoping there is some other way.

Frank,
If you are looking for more control over drum parts, open your Band In a Box song in Realband. Once the song opens, your chord layout will also be interpreted in the Realband Chord window.
Hi-lite by dragging your mouse over the chord section(s) where you are needing a different drum part and try regenerating a few times until you get what you like. If that doesn't work for you and you DO have a few bars with the correct drum pattern, copy those parts and paste em in over the top of the existing one.
You can have the same pattern throughout your song that way, if that is what you are looking for.
You can't modify Real Drum patterns due to them being in wave format. You have to either re-generate the part or use copy/paste and Realband was designed specifically for this than Biab.

Thanks MT I'm going to try it. It's about time I familiarized myself with RealBand.
I really like using Reaper and that's what has kept me from trying RealBand. Perhaps I'll use them both, RealBand to get the files in shape for Reaper.

You can quantize a wave (even a section)in Logic Studio 9 with flextime . I have quantized a Sax solo to be behind the beat before to funkafie it . Protools can do it too ,but I don't know their term for it . You can do a complete finished master in Real Band very easy with great results . I use it on my pc most of the time . If I didn't have anything but RB and Biab to begin with it would enough to do anything .

This window is one of the reasons it's been suggested around here for several years now that there needs to be a sort of "beta test" of the Manual and Help files. The whole thing needs to be rewritten imho, this window only makes sense to experienced users. Since we're talking drums, most of us use one of the high quality midi drum sound modules. I use Jamstix, others use BFD and there's others. If I take a Biab generated midi drum track and run it through the Jamstix Yamaha Studio Drums kit, it sounds awesome. Since it's midi I can edit it all I want.
Lets talk Real Band. The big deal about RB is not that it has all the super sophisticated audio manipulation things that ProTools or Sonar Producer has. No, it's that it has most of the Biab song generating functions built in but you have 48 tracks to play with not just 7 like Biab does. Biab only has one midi output port so me using Jamstix for the drums won't work in Biab because if I set Biab up to use Jamstix for midi then every midi track will go through JS. Piano doesn't sound so good on a drum kit. However if you're working with all Real Tracks and want only the drums to be midi then that would work.
RB has 32 midi output ports and it allows you to use as many different Biab styles as you want on each track or even within any single track. You can create for example 3 different Real Drum tracks plus several midi drum tracks all using different styles. Then you audition them in different parts of your song and you'll probably wind up using one part from one track here, another part from a different track there etc. When you combine several RD's with a midi track going through a good synth like JS the results can sound very good because the midi track can be edited for certain specific parts that the RD'd don't have.
I do a lot of work with prerecorded midi files that I have. RB loads them up just fine then I can start playing around with replacing a track here or there with a Biab generated part including the drums. You don't have to replace the whole track either. Maybe just a few bars while the rest of the track stays the same. When it comes to midi editing RB is actually one of the best there is. It doesn't take a back seat to anybody when it comes to that.
RB gives you all the audio editing power you need to layer, cut/paste, move around or anything else you want to do with audio tracks. RB also works with all the big VST plug in effects packages and mastering suites. Still, it's not Pro Tools or Logic but you're getting it for free with Biab while those others cost serious cash. Unless you're a real expert in high end digital audio, Real Band will do 'almost' anthing you need in order for you to create and master a high quality finished product. What it doesn't do you may not have even heard of or care about. There's very knowledgable people who have looked at the PG Music plugins you get for free for example and concluded they are world class. Doesn't mean they're all you need or want but they're pretty good right out of the box.
Like anything else in the computer world it takes time for you to learn it and become familiar enough with it to do what you need.
