Mike,

The hostel where I work uses 4 PCs and two servers - the system runs on Windows 2000 Pro, and works very well. I do as much of the maintenance in-house as possible
The drives in those PCs have been spinning 24/7 for about 7 years, and I asked permission to clone each one so we'd have a plug-and-play solution - complete with licensed operating system and reservation software - when the old drives take a powder. Management thought it sounded a bit risky, and deep-sixed the idea.
Last week one of the PCs refused to boot up - drive fried - so we paid for a new computer, new Windows7 operating system, and installation of the reservation software.

We could have saved a lot of time, trouble, and expense with Clonezilla and some new back-up drives...

just looking for clues...

I'm in that boat with a client here too. They think because they put a new drive in last year they don't need a clone, just their daily backups. They don't understand the software itself (OS and programs)is not backed up anywhere, just the databases.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Hi,
I use "Image for DOS" ("IFD", from TeraByte).

You must to pay for it, but is very cheap.
I run it from a bootable pendrive, but you can choose other ways.

I've used Acronis True Image Home for years; it's saved my butt a few times. Not free, but for me well worth it.

I went through the rounds of 'freeware' as well as 'comes with the hard drive' cloning software last year when I had a drive that ended up with some bad sectors.

The only software I found that would soldier through the bad sectors while making a clone was EASUS' disc copy software.

Then their free partitioning sofwtare worked a treat as I was cloning a 60GB drive up to a 250 GB drive.

http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/

http://www.partition-tool.com/ Use the home versions of both products for hassle free 1-2 punch.

No, I don't work for them, but these worked much better than the bundled acronis that came with the seagate drive. That version would not copy through the bad sectors.

I have been using Macrium Reflect Free Edition for a while now & seems to work quite well. You can create an image of your hard disk or partitions on your disk. Using this image you can restore the entire disk, partition or individual files and folders in the event of a partial or complete system loss. Images can be stored on local or network drives, CD or DVD media, and removable drives connected using USB or Firewire. It gives you a choice of either making a Linux or BartPE recovery CD ,in the event of a total loss of the Windows operating system your PC can be started using the Reflect recovery CD. I have not had the pleasure to use this function yet. I back up to several 1tb external drives.

I've found this thread extremely useful.

Scott: Thank you for the information on EaseUS. I've since used ToDo to back up everything. This company offers some amazing free software that will allow me to easily re-create my operating system next time I get a bigger hard drive.

Regards,
Noel

Noel -- Good Choice. Todo is nice to use. Other programs mentioned are also fine. If you discover a more likable one, you can change.

There's inevitable apprehension first time you restore an image. This is proven, widespread technology, but it feels drastic at first. If you haven't done so, I urge you to do a trial run (restoring a non-crucial partition if you like), so it won't seem so awful when the inevitable emergency strikes. A dry run will assure you that your boot disk will work when needed, that your image is good, and everything happens as expected.

Once it gets to be routine, you can improve your state of mind even further by doing restorations at the first sign of trouble, instead of hoping the virus scan will work. You will not fear hard disk breakdown any longer.
