Now this is truely a band in a box.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0K2aynMMBpo&feature=youtu.be

I have no doubt this guy is a real musician but this does seem to push the boundries of the definition.

yeah, keep an eye on this one... we'll be hearing more about the MASCHINE... it is pretty cool and it opens doors for one person acts who want to influence/interact with the music in real time.

I just think the maschine is one of those innovative things that comes along every now and then and sparks the creative interest of a generation. In this case, it probably won't be OUR generation... but it definitely has appeal to many young people I've talked to.

seems to be a hybrid of a lot of interesting musical concepts that can be controlled in real time. It has elements of a looper, a synth, a drum pad, a keyboard, a hard disk recorder and more

If Fruity Loops existed as a piece of hardware, it might be a lot like the MASCHINE

It may turn out to be a flash in the pan, but as of this moment I'm thinking probably not.

Hey! He is only pushing buttons to generate preexisting sound. Do we call this guy a musician?

(on second thought I just pushed a few buttons and am sure I generated a groan from flatpicker... perhaps I just invented a new instrument! YouTube video to come.)

The thing is evolutionary, but not revolutionary. Korg and Akai, among others, each have similar devices which play samples triggered by front-panel pads. This appears to be a bit more advanced. Combine it with Ableton or Reason and its capabilities would be virtually unlimited.

I say he's a percussionist playing a sampled instrument. I've heard Neil Peart do the same thing in a drum solo, and no one questions his musicality.

So, what's the difference from when I sit down in front of my electronic keyboard. I just push buttons to generate a pre-existing sound. In fact, because my keyboard is an Arranger keyboard, it generates a whole bunch of sounds when I just press 3 buttons.

The interface is different, the technique is different, the results are musical. Why doesn't that make him a musician?

Gary

I'm blessed watching God do what He does best. I've had a few rough years, and I'm still not back to where I want to be, but I'm on the way and things are looking far better now than what they were!

exactly, Gary! The same thing could be said of any midi controller, whether its a keyboard synth, V-drum, guitar synth or even the futuristic imaginary instruments depicted in the animusic videos. Controllers actuate stored sounds. Even acoustic instruments are plucked, tooted, depressed, bowed or whatever to actuate a naturally ocurring resonance.

People have different musical goals. Some people want to actuate the sounds to create part of the mix, others want to create the whole mix, even if it doesn't mean playing all the parts.

But my original observation has nothing to do with resurrecting the "what makes one a musician" thread. I agree that the maschine is evolutionary rather than revolutionary. But I think it is a device that has evolved to a state of unique usefulness within the genre it serves (which, by the way, is not a genre that particularly interests me. My preference is to use technology to accompany my own playing)

He may not be a musician in the classical sense...as the recent thread indicates, that is a pretty big grey area.

However, he is certainly a music composer.

Things are getting pretty crazy in the music world lately...
