I want to simulate a large crowd singing unison...absolutely no harmony, but with lots of varying voice characteristics so it really sounds like a varied crowd singing unison. Can I do this by starting with a single vocal track by using TC-Helicon? Or perhaps there's another way. When I try this with TC-Helicon I cannot get the resulting track to stay completely on the vocal line.

You might want to try Clone Ensemble. It's a DX/VST plugin that does what you are trying to do.

The freeware version is restricted so that you cannot adjust any of the settings, so you are hardwired to a single preset. A special exception to this is the Sex Machine control - you can audition all of the sex change options. This allows you to test it and get a feel for what it does. It does cost $25 to register and open up all the features.

I did this once by singing the same part vocal through a vocoder with the pitch bend wheel held slightly (and randomly) up and down, not even a complete half step, onto 5 other tracks, also running through a digital delay with 5 different slightly different slapback times, muting the original completely. I ended up keeping 3 of the 5.

However, know that I was going for a specific effect of people shouting a refrain in a chorus, and if you want serious pitch control to sound like an ensemble that idea isn't for you. (Think "Boom boom..... out go the lights".)

I have achieved similar results by simply replicating tracks, cutting timeslices, pitch adjusting each track slightly. In other words, RealBand ought to provide all tools necessary to create a great chorus from one voice. I usually find it just as easy to multitrack with a slightly different singing voice; enough tracks, and you can't tell its only one person!

I'm displaying my ignorance here and am quite interested in Clone Ensemble but don't know how to get it (or any other plugin for that matter) to work in RB. I've looked through the help pages but no luck.

Any tips?

from the rb pdf manual

Real Time Effects Plug-Ins......................................................................................................................................86

Real Time Audio Effects .......................................................................................................................................144
Appendix A: PG Music DirectX Plug-Ins............................................................................... 262

hopefully between the Clone Ensemble docs & rb manual info you can get the results you want if not keep asking ?s

Select an audio track
click the little arrow and select 'edit DX FX'
In one of the four boxes, scroll down to the bottom and click 'add VST'

browse to the dll file for the plugin (this will depend on where you saved it)
Once added it will appear in the list from then on as long as you do not move that dll file

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome
