Every now and then RB gets me caught in a loop of something and gets paralyzed. The only solution Alt-Ctrl-Del / End now. Re-open RB - the infamous "Your computer crashed last time . . . . Okay to restore all default settings (MY SETTINGS or FACTORY SETTINGS - which do you consider default????? ) Yes or No - NO - I'd like the settings I've probably spent hours tweaking. So I don't choose "defaults". Then comes "Recover data from last session" - So I say yes. Then I get an error - "Could not open the file .....etc." So I click "OK" . . . . then nothing . . . . . I click OK again . . . Nothing . . . .Frozen. Only Alt-Ctrl-Del, then back through the loop just described. It won't even let me Minimize RB and get to my desktop. With 2.5 G ram, there should be some sort of button to free us from this type of mess and automatically save whatever it was we were working on before we messed up. There will be no BK file waiting. Any solutions beyond pressing the big NUKE button. I'll be patient and wait to see if there are any of the brain trust about tonight. Thanks guys - Ian

Try ALT-TAB to see if there is a modal dialog box in the background. Until a modal dialog is dispatched, nothing else works. Hidden dialog boxes have been reported before... whether it's the problem in this case can only be determined by trying ALT TAB to see what happens.
If that doesn't work, I have no other guesses.

Appreciate the input Pat . . . unfortunately I can't even get rid of the error box - either by clicking OK or the "x" in the title bar of the Error window.
Has anyone else had this happen?

Happens to me more than I'd like usually if I try to do something to fast, maybe before RB is finished doing the first thing.
Learned to never click "Recover data from previous session". Just go to File> Open Recent and hope I saved often.
Also get an Error Message sometimes when hitting Save which says something about "Can't save that file type or some such"
Then I have to Save As and just overwrite the existing open file. Weird!
Speaking of which, every once and awhile my sound shuts off and I have to restart the computer to get it back. Any suggestions as to why?

Sounds to me like "bugs". Sometimes the word "flaky" is used to describpe the program. In the past several days I have been working on an issue with a VSTi which has caused my DAW to be "flaky" more in the last two days then in the last two years. I mean my DAW is generally rock solid, it never locks up or freezes needing a reboot, unitil the past two days when I have had to do it over a dozen times. I have both the DAW and VSTi developer looking at the current compatibility problem. So what does that have to do with your problem, I guess nothing other than I feel for ya. These DAW applications are a joy when they work and a real pain when not. I think RB does need some fixes in areas, hope the new version will address your current problems.

Another thing to consider (although it may not apply) is windows updates. Sometimes some 'improvements' cause something else to act differently. Just a thought.

Hi Guys dont know if this will be of any help as realband has never really crashed for me, but sometimes presonus studio one v1 got a bit glitchy and i tried a lot of things to try and sort it, one thing that worked for me is pulling out the usb cable attaching my controller keyboard(edirol a 500 pro),voila! the daw screen popped back up, saved my song plugged edirol back in and back to work, sounds strange i know, but try it see if it works, worth a try in a situation like that. also get into the habit of saving your sons every 10-15 mins this can save a lot of heartache and wasted effort. just a thought.. Nice feedback from everyone. Of course I ended up losing all of my work. But Carkins hit the nail on the head - SAVE OFTEN - particularly if you are doing a ton of editing. I had been doing that exact thing for several hours and had not saved once. Now the RB Temp file was loaded up with all of my edits if I wanted to redo etc - I must have had at least 50 for the program to keep track of. And then I messed it up more by shifting tracks around. And I didn't save - so imagine RB trying keep track of where all of the pieces of each track was. I should have saved and then ideally, I should have closed the program and then reopened RB. Still . . . It would be nice to have some clarity on why the "recover" doesn't work the way it is intended to work, and what exactly does "default" refer to - factory or our personal setting choices. Can you help, PG? Thanks - Ian

Maybe we should ask for a feature in all the software, to enable automatic backup of work. Of course, this along with the edit undo command would make life better.
From a programming viewpoint you do need to determine when the 'clock' goes off every 2 minutes IF the program is in Play mode, that would get ugly quick trying to save while playing...though the stutters might be interesting if done on beat and in hip hop mode.
PS. I hope the latter is a bad dream, just imagine if the hippy hoppers got loving the box. Oh boy. Of course they'd only buy one copy and pass it around a million times.
Then the violence starts over who gets it.
Slap...whoa back to reality here.

Recover 'attempts' to locate the temp files, etc that were in use during the previous session. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. I've found no reason not to try it. If it doesn't work just re-open the file, which is your only other option anyway. If it does appear to work, I 'save as' another name just in case there is some glitch that shows up later.
Default refers to the program starting over, where you set up the soundcard again, not 'my settings' (which I think BiaB does). At least that is my experience with it. I haven't had a crash (except during Beta testing sessions) in quite a while.
Have you added a new plugin? This is one of the most likely causes of new problems .. either that or a disk starting to wear out and show errors. For example temp files being written to a bad sector, etc. You could scan the disk for errors and see what it reports.
