Hi all,

I've a room in cellar which I could use to make music. I have some ideas on how to arrange the furniture, but what I really need is some example, like some picture or schema to get inspiration from.

How did you have arranged your home studio ? I mean, not only the instruments, but the furniture - desk, console, chair, how did you arrange the pc keyboard, the piano one, the speakers, etc..

[EDIT] I play e-piano and e-bass. [/EDIT]

Thanks in advance,
Sergio.

Sergio,

That is a hard question to answer. Too many different room configurations. Best advice I can think of is to experiment until you find what feels right for you.

Josie is right, it's a large topic. Every month, the editor of Sound On Sound Magazine does a studio makeover, and there is a multi-page article just on fixing one room.

You could learn a lot by picking up a copy of this magazine and reading one of those columns. It's a British publication, but Barnes and Noble carries it.

Having said that, there are a few basics that are pretty standard practice. For example, your monitors should be at head level and positioned and aimed so they form an equilateral triangle with your head. Keep ergonomics in mind for chairs design, desk height etc. since you will be spending extended periods doing editing etc.

Every room needs some form of acoustical treatment, since there will be echoes and certain frequencies that are damped or accentuated by the room layout and material. In general, blank walls and windows are a problem, so drapes, pillows, or better, acoustical tile by Aurelex can help tame a room.

But that's just a start. Good studio design is both and art and a science, and it takes effort. Even when you are done, you have to learn how your mixes translate to the outside world, and compensate accordingly.

Plenty of good books on the subject, too.

Sergio,

I found thru the years, if space allows, a U shaped setup,
if there is quite a bit of hardware, and one person.

Modified this a bit and now have a 36" x 60" desk(drawerless)
and my Yamaha keyboard to the left. Speakers under and above this.
"L" shaped, if you may.

Retired analyst, thousands of hours sitting at DEC, IBM and pc terminals.
back back prior to this. A firm small armless chair with good
back support and 5 wheel rollers.

Another Item very important lot of folks overlook...pun intended.
A quality set of prescription glasses,(no bifocal) cut for about
20-30" from your monitor. Tell eye doc, computer glasses.

Whatever distance fits you. wont allow you to see beyond where you
are, but truly help.

If you spend hundreds of hours, these are a must.

Have fun,

Seeker

+1 for the dedicated glasses. I have a special pair for reading music on a stand that also works for sitting about 2 feet from the monitor. My normal glasses with progressive lenses are a nightmare...

And the good chair is critical. +20 or one for each of the vertebrae I have.

Thanks folks for the wise advices. As suggested, I'll definitely go for the 'try and experiment' route.

Regards,
Sergio.
