Hello, I’m new to this forum but not to BIAB. I had my first BIAB in the early 90s (floppy disks). Because I was more interested in rock than in jazz and dance music, I started using VOYETRA SPG, which I replaced with CUBASE. Now and then I had an update of BIAB, but CUBASE was always one step ahead as for sounds and possibilities. So BIAB has been neglected for all these years. Maybe things are changing now by a little feature in version 2012, namely the possibility to use more than one VST in a song (style). I am using SAMPLETANK2 for “Default Synth” (drums on 10, bass on 2, guitar on 7, organ or synth on 6, piano on 3). I tried to work out the patches and effects of SAMPLETANK, so some of the songs and styles (rock/pop/blues) sound pretty good. I want to use this a basis. Then, as a cherry on the cake, I want to use REALSTRAT or REALLPC with SAMPLITUBE 3 for the guitar track. Maybe NI B4 II ore OMNISPHERE or MINIMOOG2 for the string track. No problem as far as. I never got really used to the structures of BIAB. But I could solve the problem caused by a style change. Then I disabled all REALDRUMS and REALTRACKS, so I can use the related songs and styles. BUT…….. Each time I load another song or BIAB has to be restarted, all is reduced to SAMPLETANK.
I tried to save presets, I tried do disable Song overrides. I doesn’t work. I would like to have my “Soundregistration” as a standard.
Many times I found a solution or an explanation by reading this forum. But I think this approach is too exotic and the feature is to new. So I hope to get help or a good idea by writing this thread. I had preferred to explain this in my own language (it’s a little like a English homework), but the German forum doesn’t seem to be very crowded.
Thank you in anticipation
Willi

i think you need to got into the vst dialog and choose soundregistration as your default vst synth... just load the synth and press the default synth button... you should be good to go.. PK

Thanks for your reply, Phil. But to be honest, I’m a bit at a loss. I’m worrying that I didn’t succeed to put my problem across.
I choose SAMPLETANK as my default vst synth and it works. I can hear all ST sounds by setting the right midi channels. Then I want to add a second and third vst: REALSTRAT plus AMPLITUBE 3 for the guitar section vst. For the string section I add KONTAKT or MINIMOOG V.
Then I would like try out the sounds in styles and songs to see what matches up. I can do this while changing the styles. But as soon as I load a new song, my second and third vst have disappeared. I want all three vsts together as a standard.
Maybe I didn’t understand the vst integration enough or my preference settings are insufficient. If so, I would like to learn from my faults.
Thanks
Willi

I believe you can only have one default VST instrument. Which is why Kontakt and Minimoog are being cleared out when you load in a new song.
On the other hand, there's an old trick that works for all kinds of music programs: you can create own default song, with all three of those synths, and after you click New Song you can load that. (If you name that one NONAME.SGU, it'll load automatically when you click New Song.)

The VST synth settings are saved with each song (I believe) so the problem will likely persist. filkertom's settings idea will work for a *new* song, but if another song is loaded it will reload the synths from the saved song file.
I think your problem will persist with the way things work right now; maybe put a post in the wishlist section to be able to save default setups, as currently I think BiaB only saves one synth in the default setup.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

Correct, or at least that's my experience as well. There is a way to save complete configurations though. Use the 'Save Group' and 'Load Group' buttons. This saves or loads the complete config to a .tgs file. Make separate folders and give your files extra long descriptive file names to keep track of things.
To test this for main synth, load a style that has midi, and click your vst button. (for new users: it's right of the rec button. If it's hid, click the little double arrows.) Starting with the bass load some instruments in all your channels. Don't spend any time tweaking, we're not worried about what it sounds like at the moment. Click the 'save group' button, make a subfolder with descriptive name, then give your file a very long descriptive name and save it. Then, just to prove the point, assign a different synth as you main one. Then reopen your song or style and play a few bars on the new synth, stop it and hit your vst button. Hit 'load group', find your tgs file and ST should load with the exact config you saved it as.
For the mixer window, you can do other tricks if you want, such as using combi's for your sounds, and some of the things you mentioned above.
It's quite a bit of work, but as you are working on songs, save your configs to tgs files, as well as the song you're working on. Pretty soon you'll have a nice little collection. I use Cayote for my main synth. It sounds awful, but it loads fast and gives a fair representation of the style. Then if I find something I think I might want to work on, I load a tgs file that suits the style. I use it similar to the old combo button on biab for those who remember that.

Cool idea. I like those tgs files too. I've got a nice big folder full of them. Now I see another use.

I just found out PG has made a few for Amplitude already. If you load Amplitude, hit the load grp button and they have a few tgs files saved for you already. Kool!

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!
With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!
Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!
Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.
Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
