Hi,

Very often, questions about recognition and chord types are posted in my forum. As a sample, this below:

Cita:

translated and adapted from Spanish:

How can I introduce, for example, the chord Eadd9 in BiaB?
When I open the chord builder or MIDI Chord Detection and I play Em add9(no 7th) whose structure is EGBF#,
after CTRL ENTER it is recognized as Gmaj7/E whose structure is EGDF#B. I cannot understand why it adds D which I have not played (and definitely not wanted one).

I know the possibilities and limitations thereon. However in order to provide a better answer, I would like to know your valious opinions, about possible alternatives or workarounds.

Thanks,
Carlos

When I type Eadd9 BIAB translates that to E2... not the same as E add 9 but that's as close as I can get to Eadd9.

Thanks Mitch, I use 2 type chords myself, good workaround, but it omit the third (3th). I think they are looking for some way the MIDI Chord Detection recognize it directly as a minor chord with 9 added, since perhaps in some cases may be a bit cumbersome to manually change a large number of chords. They drive me to think about the possibility BIAB added a feature like 'search and replace' chord as is found in text, word processors, spreadsheets and similars and in a easier way as with Chord Substitution feature.

Hi Carlos. I answer a lot of questions like this, too.

Just to review what you must already know, that I often put in an answer:

The Chord Builder gives the list of the chord types that are supported in BIAB.

The file, x:\bb\pgshortc.txt is worth looking at, since it will translate some entries into other supported chord types, and you can add your own shortcuts into a file you create called x:\bb\shortcut.txt You would do this if you want to type a particular chord but are satisfied to hear the supported one that BIAB substitutes.

You can add your request for a new chord type in the Wishlist Forum.

Note that there are some chord types that say one thing but play another. For example, a dim chord is actually played as a dim7 chord in most styles in BIAB. Entering a dim7 chord will appear as a dim chord but sound as a dim7 chord.

Also, for complex chords, the chord you hear and see when auditioning the chord in the Chord Builder may be played in BIAB with different inversions and some chord tones left out, as a real musician would do. That same chord may also be played differently in different places in the song. Thus, even if you know in theory you do not want all of the tones in a particular chord, in practice it may sound OK.

Hope that helps.

Matt

It's already there. Edit, Search/Replace Chords.

Mitch, look in the file c:\bb\pgshortc.txt and you will see why.

I was just looking at that file, and I do not 'get it'. Maybe I will tomorrow.. had a couple glasses of wine so tonight might not be good for serious stuff...

So is there a way to add a real Eadd9 chord ? If so, how exactly does one do it ? (the dummy version please).

Thanks Matt for absolutely useful answers.

About the 'search and replace' you are right, the funny fact is I used it in the past sometime and I forgot it now, maybe so far, caused I've been satisfied with BIAB chords possibilities.
Now I need to going further in x: \bb\pgshortc.txt

The search and replace is Edit, Search/Replace Chords. Do you have a current version of BIAB?

It is not possible to create a chord type Xadd9 that is not supported. And the shortcut is already there to type add9 and get 2.

2012 build 349

OK...found the search and replace, but this will still not get us an add9 chord, right ?

Carlos,

When I've used X2 chords, the 3rd is usually played and the 2nd is usually played above the 3rd (i.e. as an added 9th). My understanding is that BIAB and RB interpret X2 as Xadd9 (not as a sus 2 where the 2nd is used in place of the 3rd).

To confirm this, I have just added C2 and watched the keyboard telling me what notes were being played. For the majority of the chords in the piano part the notes were: bass = C, chord = E-G-D. This is one way in which a pianist would play Cadd9.

Just my 2 cents worth!
Noel

So this may be similar to the dim/dim7 situation I mentioned above? You type 'add9' and it gets converted to '2' but is mostly played as 'add9'.

Of course, then you have to consider 'sus2' and 'add2', which are also converted to '2'.
