Hi folks, I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Tim Lawrence. I live In Long Beach California with my wife Debra. I've been legally blind since birth and totally blind for about 10 years now. I worked as a computer programmer for 25 years here in Long Beach at the Long Beach Navel Ship Yard. I retired about 10 years ago after losing the rest of my sight. Since then I've been pursuing my first love which is song writing. I play the guitar and a little piano. I've been interested in Midi for about 10 years, and have played around with BIAB part of that time. I have a Tyros1 which I use as my external midi module these days. It's hooked to the computer via a USB port. I just recently upgraded to BIAB 2012 and am amazed how far the software has advance since I first started using it back in 2005. The real tracks are just fantastic. Here's somethin' I did back in 2006 using BIAb with a sound card synth, a Jv8-80 and a Prodius. Mixed it via Sonar. It's sort of a new age instrumental. http://webpages.charter.net/timmusic/Have a great day, Tim

One of the beta testers is blind and uses Jaws. Contact support it interested. Or do you use that with the software now?
BTW welcome from Canada, where the snow is knee deep and the skys are cloudy all day.

I'm currently working on a vocal called Who's been driving My Car. Just about done with it and hope to post it to the User Showcase forum soon.

Welcome Tim,
That is one beautiful piece of music you have composed.
Two thumbs up.
OK, a random thought; Why does toilet paper need a commercial? Who's not buying it?

tim, good on ya! very nice, my friend.
if we were to team with john conley we would be those three monkeys, hear, speak, and see no evil. no offense intended but you'll be right at home here. i'm totally mute and paralyzed yet i am working on a project wherein i hope to sing again (of sorts). ian has hearing loss but has overcome that deficit and writes beautiful music.
i'm nearly 71 and probably among the old-timers here.
since i live in a nursing home, i spend a lot of time here. not that i have a lot of free time but i love these people, cast and crew, so much.
i have never been associated with a more caring bunch of musicians or knowledgeable people.
anywho, a hearty oklahoma "howdy!" and welcome to ya.

tim,
so, 'splain "jaws" to me. is it basically a screen reader? how does it help you "see" to use band-in-a-box or other graphics intensive software? if i think that it would help me then i would have my speech therapist check into getting it for me. if it is simply a screen reader, my dynavox will read aloud for me. also, for those that may not realize it, adobe reader will read .pdf documents aloud. consequently, jaws must be a whole lot more. please 'splain.

Hey Don,
Yeah Jaws is basically a screen reader. That said, it does so much more. First of all it only works with Window based machines. It is just software and resides in memory in the back ground interacting with what ever other programs you are running. At it's basic level it speaks text that is displayed on the computer screen, and lets you know if you need to enter data or check a box or the like. It will speak combo boxes, list boxes, edit boxes and so on. Jaws will speak the color of the foreground and background of the current window with the press of a key. You can have Jaws set to speak each character you type via the keyboard back at you, or have it set not to speak typed characters at all.
Jaws works very good with popular software out there like Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office products, Fire Fox, and the like. Unfortunately it doesn't work right out of the box very good with programs like Sonar, BIAB, Power Tracks Pro and similar packages. To use those programs takes a bit of tweaking by using built in macro routines to help Jaws work better in those situations. You create scripts for each program you need to tweak. A script is just a file of the macro routines needed for that program. Unfortunately the average computer user would find it difficult to use Jaw's macro routines. They are more like a programming language. Fortunately being a former programmer I am able to write alot of the scripts I need to make a certain program work better with speech. For example I've been able to get about 90% of BIAB to speak for me using the Jaw's script language. Same with Sonar. I haven't tried Real Band yet to see how speech accessible it is with out having to write a Jaws script for it.
I'm not really sure Jaws would do much for you in your situation. I bet there are software packages out there better suited for your needs.
I hope this helps If there's Any way I can help, just let me know.
Tim

tim,
you may want to discuss making pg music products 100% compatible with jaws to peter. he will recognize the market potential and you sound like the one who could make it happen.

Tim, welcome to the forum family! Yes, the program has become even more amazing in 2012 than it was in 2005!
I really enjoyed the song you posted, and I look forward to hearing what you produce with the latest version

Jaws testing forms a part of the beta process and has for years. And somewhere there was info posted on a tutorial.
I know the development team have implemented changes so that Jaws works with the available software, to what extent I'm not sure, but the latest 2012 version was beta tested using Jaws.
