Two things here, Pat. First, if you're talking about simply finding a way to hide it from "the man" sure, this will probably work, as I said millions of people do this sort of thing every day. Second, since we're in a public forum here, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act(DMCA) clearly states per it's name that any digital copying beyond your own personal use in your own home is illegal. Period. Personal use means something like copying a CD/DVD you bought on your own hard drive or burning a dup disc for archiving purposes in case the original gets lost or destroyed. Techically you're not even allowed to play it for friends in your own living room.
Anything any of us posts on the internet is considered "published" in a legal sense. Read the DMCA, it's spelled out there in detail. Putting copywritten material on one of those members only Yahoo groups or any other site is still considered as being digitally published, it's outside of the scope of your own personal use and is forbidden. The real biggie is it makes no difference if it's being done for money or not. Just doing it as a fan for free matters not at all.
Also, all this stuff I may talk about concerning hidden websites and such is based strictly on what I've read or talked about with others, I certainly have never done such things.
Cool idea though.

I see nothing wrong with a general discussion about chord structure vrs. genre, and citing examples. It's not like we are making sets of the Great Canadian Songbook stuff and sharing them with melodies.
You can of course, start a thread on a certain book, but pick one Notes has gone to the trouble of transcribing and we could buy the actual book via Amazon.
Then we start in...
A your adorable, b you are be-you-ti-full. (That might be one of the songs.) Then we pick different ways to build that. At what tempo?

I agree with everything you say, and I think that point has been understood by all the whole time this discussion has been going. The one and only point of discussing it at all is to avoid implicating PGMusic by posting stuff here.
The fact remains that the reason why so much protected stuff CAN indeed be found online is because the lawyers who prosecute such cases have this predictable need to end up with money at the end of the lawsuit. Theres no money to be made in uncovering and prosecuting a handful of individuals. Even much larger sites, like the Yahoo BIAB group, which has for years held large repositories of protected songs, complete with melody, title, signatuire licks FOR THE EXPRESS PURPOSE OF DISTRIBUTING THEM ... they are still in business. Every now and then they get a warning and then remove whatver song was named in the warning, or repost the songs without the melody.
My point is that the likelihood of getting busted as small fish who aren't highly visible is very very low
Having said that, I have no interest in the project. But anybody who wants to play their songs for friends has recently heard a number of ways to make it happen... or not. Just don't do it here. This open discussion is already borderline problematic for PGMusic

Yahoo profits by throwing ads at the users. So there is a sort of complicity. And you still all speak as if American Law applies outside. Well not really, unless you talk about murder and things like that. But, there remain rumblings of changing the laws. Right now, many of the torrent servers doing illegal movies reside in Canada. The fact is, the law here says if you index bits and pieces of a movie assembled from there and here by your own search engine, and thus permit people to find and download the thing, you are not breaking the law as it is written, RIGHT now. It's under discussion, but not in the legislative chain at the present time. I am on the fence on this. But consider the following: Johnny wants to learn how to play Yesterday by the beatles on his guitar. (Evil idea) I teach Johnny the chords and he sings along with the tune, he learned it. (Evil) Johnny sings the song at the family Easter gathering and people other than his family are there. (Very Evil public performance) Johnny gets together with 3 kids up the street and they practice Yesterday. Today they are breaking the law. Tomorrow they will play it at Church. (the most evil of all maybe). This song, Yesterday, had gotten to the point that by tomorrow, they all will be lawbreakers and face jail. Right beside the gang bangers. Sir Paul et al. furious that Johnny and the Rogues used their song in a place of worship attack the Church with lawsuits. Bottom line is Yesterday cannot be played today, or tomorrow. Every person listening to it must have purchased the sheet music, including the audience. The government tracking device is attached to each piece of sheet music, and after (x) number of prescribed days the plastic sheets loose the images and the government seal shows over the entire surface, only to be activated again by your secret code, after which you can decide to activate the sheets again to enable you to sing the government song, free to all who pay taxes. Nice.

I haven't personally checked it out but people have been saying here for at least two years that Yahoo removed all those Biab files from the Yahoo Groups site.

I have a very old (6 yrs lol) Yahoo id. I hung out there for a while. I just went back, logged in, found the files, concluded they contained .mgu files, and logged back out.
I didn't download any of them, they seem like copies of stuff I have found over the years, like a solitary shell collector on a remote beach.
I freaking love being all romantic, and having new stuff the docs dig up for me to dig.

Only there's nothing that Sir Paul can do about it, because he doesn't own the rights to "Yesterday". Not that he hasn't tried, but he's never been able to get together to buy the rights to his songs when they were available.

Great ideas. And I will take it another step... Why is everyone working by themselves in this model? It is almost like a competition. How about a collaboration approach? Everyone is using BIAB for instrumentation. I'm assuming we're all recording MP3 tracks (or similar) that are being mixed together for the final song. Why not have multiple people add tracks to the same BIAB arrangement? How cool would that be.

OK, you guys know me - I'm still working the day job 50+ hours a week with frequent travel around the world (keeping the wife and remaining kids at home in the life style they have grown acustomed to). Just dreaming of the day when,like so many of you, I can retire and sit back and really spend time on music.
So enough talk, Eddie started with a great idea. Which is doable. Lets keep it only on arrangeing and keep it in BIAB with only the BIAB tools (No audio). Just play kick the can with this starting point the most creative / unusual/ unique / strange... will win the prize of his(her) fellow BIAB-formites deep and lasting respect and admiration.

I already have a version of Misty on my blog! I did it as a B3 quartet when those Mike LeDonne RTs first come out last year. That was the last time I've touched a guitar, sigh. But now that he's got solo RTs on B3 too, I've found the music for Welcome to a Prayer by Pat Martino/Joey DeFrancesco that I might have to risk some blisters for...

I believe it is OK to use the changes freely as long as the original "Wave" melody is not included or linked to them.
Why not extend the challenge to include an original melody to go with these changes. This would offer a chance to use the Jobim chords and preserve the Brazilian flavor... What a challenge/pleasure to come up with a fitting new melody that would honor Jobim's original changes!

I like it, Bebop!!! What might make it even MORE fun is if someone with a strong Latin Jazz background would create a basic MIDI or MP3 file of those changes to give us all the same starting point, the same key, etc.... Not pointing fingers are singling anybody out to do this, of course, but I'd hate to see this idea get dropped to the MATT before it is FINLEY finished....

That's correct - a particular set of chord changes can't be given a copyright. As mentioned elsewhere, there's a popular process of "reverse engineering" songs (usually for commercials) that are "in the style of" a particular song, but differ in enough melodic details that they're considered unique.
