I don't want to give up the 60 GB or so I'd need to store all the RealTracks on my hard drive -- but carrying around an extra, external drive also seems like a clunky solution. So I'm thinking of putting the tracks on a 64 or 128 GB jump drive. Workable solution? Anybody else doing this? What kind of specs would the drive need (transfer rate, etc.) to be practical?

Some people run the entire app from a remote drive and say that it works well. As long as you get something fast enough (minimum USB2) you should be fine.

I was running BIAB 2011 from an external thumb flash drive and it worked fine. Did seem to take a while to start up, though. If you just want to put the RealTracks/Drums on it, that should work fine, too.

I use an external hard drive by Iomega. which is pretty compact (4 1/2 x 3 1/4 x 5/8 inches), and powers itself from the USB port on my laptop. It would have been more convenient to replace the existing 60GB internal drive, or add a second one, but the price comparison made me put up with the inconvenience (and clunkiness) of the external drive.

I have everything related to BIAB installed on the internal drive EXCEPT for RealTracks and RealDrums.

I don't know how it compares with a USB stick as far as speed of data transfer goes, but the external drive doesn't seem to be the limiting factor - it's the CPU that slows things down on my computer.
