Actually, this style of playing is quite popular now - nothing unusual about it. For similar artists, check out:

Don Ross
Andy McKee
Tommy Emmanuel (a little more melodic and less slapping)
Raul Midon
Kaki King
etc.

You'll find that each of the top end acoustic guitar companies have at least one guitarist in this vein that they use as endorsee.

This slap-oriented style is one branch off of the bigger branch of acoustic guitar playing known as 'fingerstyle'. If you google 'fingerstyle' you'll come across a huge assortment of acoustic guitar wizards.

Well, then you move on to Chapman Stick and go to Leo Gosselin and Bob Culbertson. Look for Gosselin doing Wave somewhere on youtube. The keyboard player int he band I play in is an accomplished stick player. Quite an instrument.

Also look for Justin King and his 2 and 3 necked acoustic guitars.

McKee is [subjectively] the best on this list. More emotive. Some of these slappers lose the feeling of the wood and steel. Perhaps they should go electric.

BTW: All are much more talented than I. Just what my ears say.

I liked this'un:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1dtU7aGwvg&feature=related

I had wondered what had happened to the guitar's finish Southwest of the bridge, now I know. I also enjoyed his neck-bending vibrato and banjo style peg-twisting ala Adrian Legg and Buck Trent. Very entertaining. IMHO

Thanks for the link, Marc.

I googled Michael Hedges. All the photos I saw had him with an ACOUSTIC harp guitar.

Ah the result of the dreaded PG reply button making it look like comment is aimed at previous post.....

Michael Hedges was not who I was referring to. We had Stanley Jordan in there and some other electric players. That said, Hedges was also famous for his Trans-trem electric playing and guitar custom made for him.

My main point in my post is that there is a whole world of fingerstyle and slapper guitarists that have come about in the last 15 years. This type of playing is becoming quite common actually. There are fingerstyle specialists in nearly every state of the USA.

Scott, that being said - I would add Clarence White, Doc Watson, Bryan Sutton, Norman Blake, Tony Rice, Don Ross (already mentioned}, Mark O'Connor, David Grier, Russ Barenberg, James Alan Shelton, Paul Burch, Leo Kotke, Robin Bullock, Kaki King, Greg Douglas, Pullman, Alex de Grassi, Adrian Legg, "Mississippi" John Hurt, etc. All excellent acoustic guitarists. That's off the top.

Now thats a heckuva list! You've got all of my acoustic guitar hero's in there. Russ Barenberg's course on "Exploring The Fingerboard" really opened up the guitar for me many years ago.

thanks for posting Marc. I've heard most of the other named musicians, but until now I hadn't heard of this guy. I enjoy that style of playing, and it's good to have an awareness of people who are playing what I like to hear.

This was a new discovery for me but since he does a duo with Tommy Emanuel he ain't just off the turnip truck.
