Hello, everyone!

I am new to Band In A Box, so please bear with me. Whenever I select Real Tracks for an instrument, the track becomes silent. If I pick MIDI for, say, Bass guitar, I can hear it fine when it plays back. When I select a Real Track for the Bass guitar, that track goes silent during playback. When I export the combo (or individual instrument) to Logic 9 using the drop station, even the AIFF tracks are silent. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for your help!

Joe

Hello Joe,

Do you hear *any* audio on your computer? What happens when you try to play an audio file (mp3, m4a, mp4, etc.) by double-clicking on it in Finder?

Check in 'System Preferences | Sound | Output' to see what's selected there...

If you can get sound from the speakers (not an external midi device), make sure that "enable realtracks" is checked in "Realtracks preferences".

Hello, Andrew and Svenne!

I checked, and enable realtracks is checked in the real tracks preferences.

Under preferences/sound/output, my computer has my M-audio Fastrack audio interface selected. I can hear all audio files just fine, audio with movies, music, etc. Here is a more detailed description of what I am doing.

Open BIAB. Create a chord progression. I click on the Style button and select a Realtracks style. Click play. All that I can hear are the drums. When I pick a MIDI style, I can hear everything playing. Now, when I click on, say, Bass, up on top, and select Choose Realtracks, and choose one, the bass goes silent and everything else plays as before. When I export the bass that has been assigned a real track via the drop station into Logic, there is no sound, and the waveform is that of a silent track (no peaks or valleys).

I have a feeling that I am doing something wrong at a very beginner level, but I can't put my finger on it.

Thanks for all your help!

Joe

Hey Joe,
What do you have set in the RealTracks preferences for "Global volume adjust" it should be set to zero db.

Also, in the RealTracks picker dialog, make sure that the "Disable RealTracks/force to MIDI" checkbox isn't selected for the tracks you are trying to assign RealTracks to.

Finally you could try deleting your preferences file ("Band-in-a-Box Preferences_X86" located in the "Band in a Box / Preferences" folder and relaunch BIAB.

BIAB will re-create a new prefs file, and it will have you re-select your MIDI driver, it's possible something got corrupted in the file.

Hopefully this helps.

- Jay

Hi, JayO,

As you suggested, I trashed the preferences file, made sure that the Global Volume Adjust was at zero db, checked to make sure the box for Disable RealTracks/force to MIDI checkbox was unchecked. When I select a RealStyle, I hear the drums OK, just nothing else.

Wow that is strange. I'm going to assume the drums are MIDI which is why you are hearing them though.

The next thing would be to check if your RealTracks installation is OK.
If you right click on your RealTracks folder (in the BIAB folder) and do "Get info..." the size should be very large (mine is 54.5 Gb, I have the everything pak installed). If the size is less than that maybe not all your RealTracks got installed.

Next I would open up some of the sub folders in the RealTracks folders and double click on some of the .m4a files to make sure they play, or if you have 10.6 or 10.7 you can highlight the file and hit the space bar to hear them in Quicklook.

Do you have more than one account set up on your machine ?
If so you could log into another account to see if you get any sound out from BIAB.

Do you have the hard drive version of BIAB or the DVD installers ?
If you have the hard drive, I would try running the program from the external drive, or if you have the DVD's you may have to re-install the RealTracks individually.

Hopefully this helps.

Hi, Jay,

It looks like the size is 1.69 Gbs. I bought the $129 package of BIAB. However, inside the RealTracks folder, all the subfolders have small red circles with minus signs in them. When I try to open one, I get a message saying "The folder xxx cannot be opened because you don't have permission to see it's contents." My account does have admin privileges on. Whaddy think?

Ahh... If you highlight the the RealTracks folder, and do "Get Info..." again, at the bottom of the window you will see "Sharing and permissions" is your account name listed there ?

It should be there, and next to it (in the privilege column) it should say "read & write".
If not you should add your account, and make the permissions "read & write" then pull down the gear menu and select "apply to enclosed items". You will get a warning saying "are you sure ?" click OK and try BIAB again.

That should do it.

Hi, Jay,

Success!

I checked the permissions on that folder in the Get Info window and it did say Read & Write. However, just for the heck of it I clicked on the little gear and selected the 'Apply to enclosed items'. The red circles went away, and now Realtracks works as expected.

Thanks for the help!
