I have bought a Tascam US-122mkII audio/MIDI interface to be able to use ASIO to play VSTi:s in realtime with PT 2010. I haven't had the time to test it thoroughly, but it seems to work fine in most situations so far (I REALLY miss my X-fi's "what u hear" option in the mixer though.)
One thing that bugs me is that I can't play my VSTi:s unless there is a song playing. So to audition different patches I first need to load a song and then press play to be able to hear the VSTi I am playing. Is this really necessary or is there something I don't understand. I have tried my Tascam interface with Acoustica Mixcraft in ASIO mode and there I am able to audition the patches without playing along to an existing song. I'd like it to work the same way in PT. Is there a way to achieve this?

Hi Ola.
In the TRACKS window right click on a track and select a PORT. A dialogue will open asking you to select a VSTi. Once you've loaded the VSTi, make sure you have the MIDI THROUGH checked in the OPTIONS-MIDI THROUGH menu.
Right click on the track again to select a MIDI CHANNEL and PATCH and you should then be able to play that sound. Be careful not to move off that track or the playback will stop.

Does it matter if the MIDI THROUGH is set to GLOBAL or TRACK SPECIFIC?
That said, I've tried both and still can only play a VSTi-sound when a song is playing. Microsoft GS Wavetabel synth plays fine irrespective of a song is playing or not though.
Also does it matter what MIDI CHANNEL I choose?
I have tried to follow your advice but still no luck I'm afraid. It works just fine when a song is playing. I can then play the VSTi and the particular patch I prefer, but as soon as the song stops playing I get no sound when playing om my midi keyboard or YouRock Guitar.

Funny... I tried it in RealBand 2009.5 now and it works fine there. No problem at all auditioning VSTi:s.

I would suggest that there is a conflict with channel selection. Select a specific channel, say channel 1, to be used by your external keyboard and ensure that this channel is not used by any of the Midi tracks in the song.
As the system works with PT 2009.5 then check the Preference settings between the two versions.

Hi Ola,
In the ASIO Audio Drivers window, there's a checkbox marked "ASIO Always On". If it's not checked, then the driver goes to sleep when the song is stopped. Checking the box will probably solve the problem.

Indeed, checking the "ASIO Always On" solved the problem!
Finally I'm able to use my YouRockGuitar and VSTi:s in PT without any problems. Really happy now!
