Hi,
Two days ago, for the first time, I decided to plug a Mic into the front of my Dell Optiplex 780 computer and try to record sound into my BIAB songs. The Mic wouldn't play at first, then I jiggled the connections on back, and it started working. So, I opened BIAB, loaded a song and tried recording Audio. There was no sound for the previously recorded song, no sound recorded from the Mic, and no sound from my keyboard into BIAB. All BIAB sound was gone, but I had sound everywhere else on my computer.
I spent 2 1/2 hours with BIAB tech, but to no avail. One guy was really good; he took control of my computer and tried everything remotely. Finally, he said that something had seized control of my sound or sound card, but that he could not find what it was. He said I should go to Dell.
I have my Midi Input Driver set to USB uno Midi Interface, my Midi Output Driver se to LoopBe Internal Midi. On the Midi/Audio Drivers Setup I have, in the lower right, my Audio Settings showing (ASIO Always). When n I click on that I get Audio Settings where the Audio Drive Type is set to ASIO. When I click Audio Drivers, the next screen shows, under Select open Asio Device: Asio4ALLv2. Just below, the Input Port and Export Port show: (0,1) Not Connected 1 + Not Connected 2.
When I click the ASIO Driver's Control Panel button, upper right, the next screen shows, under WDM Device List, that my SoundMAX Integrated Digital HDA has a red X or cross - meaning not working, then Sound MAX HD Audio 1 and SoundMax Audio 0 have red X's or crosses showing that they are not working.
On the lower right of this screen the wrench icon has a big red X through it.
We downloaded and install new ASIO drivers. Didn't help.
The Tech at BIAB downloaded new drivers for the SoundMAX I have, but he said he could go no further do to exposure if something happened to my computer. He suggested going to Dell, explaining the situation, and having them install the drivers if they were necessary.
Dell, in my opinion, ripped me off with a scam. A guy in India (Pakistan?) took control of my computer and after a cursory examination – only a few minutes – told me that I didn’t need to explain more; he knew what the problem was. Something had corrupted files on my computer and he needed to rework the whole thing. Next, he told me my warranty was out of date and that to continue I could pay $140.00 onetime fee good for 72 hours or $255.73 (including taxes) for a one year warranty. I queried him as to whether a fix was guaranteed, and he said yes, and that I’d be able to check it before he was through.
So, desperate dummy that I am, I paid the $255.73, and he took over my computer, telling me, “This will take 30 to 40 minutes, you relax but leave the phone on speaker so I can talk to you if necessary.” He put me on hold and I watched what he did. What he did was 1) Run Malware which is already on my computer and runs regularly, then, 2) he installed a free version of Hippo Files and ran that, and finally, 3) installed a free version of SuperSpy Virus protection and ran that.
After about an hour and fifteen minutes to an hour and a half, I walked out of the room to go to the bathroom. When I returned minutes later, he was gone, and the session, I guess, was ended. Nothing was fixed.
So, can anybody help me with returning the sound to my BIAB which seems to have been screwed up when I plugged a microphone into the front of my computer?

first get rid of asio for all for the moment. You can install later. Maybe.Then in device manager see if you sound card has a yellow ! mark or red X. If it does rt click on it and uninstall it. Reboot. Let windows reinstall the driver for it.Then open BIAB and use MME drivers and see if your sound is back. We'll work on reinstall of asio4all later.

Oh, I forgot to say that if I change to MME I do get sound, but of poor quality when I replay a song. Does that help any?

Define "poor quality" - are you refering to Midi or Audio playback?

Being BIAB i'm assuming either midi or Rts.
Reinstall the soundcard driver.
BTW why the loopB output driver? What plays back the midi from BIAB? an external device?A soft synth. More info. What are you playing the audio through?

Jerry, I don't think Dell is in business to rip you or anyone off. You paid for a one year warranty and you should get the full service. I do a lot of business with Dell and they are generally very proper. While I personnally don't like to work via remote access while sitting on the phone, that is the way they provide service. You just need to be sure you get it by calling.

When I play one of my songs it is slighly herky-jerky with, I think, a little static occasionally. It was poor enough that I just closed it, determined to wait for ASIO to be corrected.

Jerry, you still have not answered John's questions and his request for more info. Dispite what I said about Dell, they likely will not be able to help you with your sound system setup with BIAB. This is a specialized area that you will be best instructed here. When you say "..slighly herky-jerky with, ... a little static ", with your MME driver this makes me think of a mismatch in the sampling rate between the program and your sound device. BIAB is at 44,100 Hz if you card differs it can make some nasty noises and will indeed effect quality of output audio.
Playback should not be any different with the ASIO versus the MME driver. The ASIO genrally is associated with lower latency which effects recording not playback. The MME is the recommended BIAB driver for playback as it is most often problem free.

Well, this is where the rubber meets the road or where the techno-dummy exposes his lact of understanding, but here is what I know:
I have a Kurzweil K2600XS that I use to "play" my songs into BIAB. There are two midi cables from the Kurz to the computer. They come from Midi In and Midi Out on the back of the KURZ. Long ago I realized that I'd never be able to configure BIAB so what I have now is the result of sessions with Techs at BIAB. Gulp, I don't even understand your questions, "Wnat plays back the midi from BIAB? an external device? A soft synth?" When I hit PLAY or REPLAY the sound comes from the speakers on the computer. Make sense? Does that help?
Under MIDI/Audo Drives Setup I have these things slected because I was told to:
Synthesizer/Sound Card - General MIDI Instrument Misc
Under Get Patch/Drum Kit Info I have a check by Use VST/Dxi Synty and by Route Midi Thru to Midi Driver.
Under General support (128 extra patches) I have, in the rectangle, General MIDI 2(GM2) supoort.
On the bottom righ I have Audio Settings (ASIO Always)
Is there anything else I can retreive from the setting that will help you figure this out?

I was told by BIAB techs that MME had an inherent latency problem that the use of ASIO4Allv2 plus Coyte Forte would avoid. I downloaded and installed both of these at their instruction. I've had no problem with the latency, or anything really, until I plugged a microphone into my computer two days ago.
I have always though of Dell as a great company with good products, but, really, is just running two or three versions of Malware and Spyware and leaving without any contact good business? Especially when the tech told me that I'd be able to make sure the problem was corrected when he finished. Oh, and he had my home number, so he could have called back. Not what I expected for $255.73, however, I may be bombarded wiht Indian/Pakistani help tomorrow. Who knows?
No offense to you, please. I am overly stessed and frustrated by this problem.

Good info Jerry, relax this evening, help will be coming. Playing via the extenal Keyboard does add a level of added detail, but folks here will be able to handle that.

Well, I am overwhelmed by your optimisim and encouragement! Really! But, here is what I did and what happened...
The BIAB tech told me to download new SoundMAX drivers from Dell - well, actually, he did while he was in control of my computer. But, he wouldn't install them. Said to have Dell do it.
So, just now, I took a chance and installed them, and when the computer rebooted, I checked and the Input Port and the Output Port audio drivers are CONNECTED!
And, the program, with just a small test, seems to work just fine. I can record my melody into a New Song and listen to play back. The notes even show up on the screen!
There is just one tiny problem. When I click on REPLAY I am getting this message in a box:
Audio and/or Dxi Output will be silent. The ASIO4ALL drive is not connectm, likely due to your using a soft-synth (like GS-WaveTable) for MIDI. Reboot Windows if persists.
But, when I click off BIAB performs correctly I haven't tried the reboot yet, but I will.
Suddenly, the world looks a little brighter.
Now, how do I get a microphone to work without blowing up the sound in BIAB?

I told you in my first post to reinstall the drivers. I also tld you to get rid of ASIO4ALL.Please do that and switch to MME.

We actually managed to get rid of the message as well by going into the ASIO drivers dialog and turned of "Show warning for untested soundcards" which seemed to cure the spurious message the customer was receiving even though the ASIO ports are now connected. Unless there are further issues I'll keep an eye on the thread.
