Hi folks!
New to this forum, but I hope someone can help me with this problem I am having. When I bought BIAB I downloaded it to my computer but also bought the hard drive version. My BIAB that I downloaded doesn't have the real tracks so I just use the hard drive version. My problem is this, the Icon that I have on my desktop for the hard drive version, gets removed from my desktop when I shut down my computer, but the icon I have for the downloaded version never does. At first I could not find the real tracks version and when I did, I copied it to another hard drive. I am always having to re-upload BIAB with real tracks about every two to three days. Does anyone know why this Icon is removed from my desktop but the other Icon is not and how do I keep the Icon for the hard drive version, to stay on my desktop? Nothing else on my desktop is ever removed, this is crazy and a pain in the #@$%^&*()_!!!!!!!
Thanks for your help!

Hi and welcome to the forum. I can think of a few things here, but I would just be guessing and that's inefficient in a user forum. My suggestion is to give PG Music Support a call and let them work with you, maybe even taking control of your computer.
However, just in case we can figure this out, it would help us if you could tell us about your system. What version of BIAB? What OS (Windows 7, etc.). Which did you install first, the download or the external drive version? Did you do the install from the external drive, and if so, which of the four install choices did you use?
BIAB 2026 Win Audiophile. Software: Fender Studio One 8, Swam horns, Acoustica-7, Notion 6, Song Master Pro, Win 11 Home. Hardware: Intel i9, 32 Gb; Presonus Quantom HD8 & Faderport 8, Royer 121, Adam Sub8 & Neumann 120 monitors.

Great advice from Matt, and I'm guessing here, but you might try deleting both shortcuts and making a new one that points to bbw.exe on your external drive. If it gets deleted, PG support sounds like your best bet.

Random guess: did you install BIAB to the default folder of C:/BB ? If you use C:/Program Files there will be problems.

Hi Matt!
I have BIAB 10.5 and I installed this version first. When I received the external drive then I installed that one and I have used that one since. I use windows Vista. I installed both in my C:drive. It is strange that the Icon for the first download, stays on the desktop and is always there without any problems opening it. I think you are right, I should contact support.
As far as which of the four install choices did I use, I don't rmember since it has been a long time since I did install them.

Version 10.5 dates back to 2001, but they did not use external drives for BIAB then. Perhaps you mean version 2010.5?
You will definitely benefit from calling Support.

I know this is a workaround, but I just open up My Computer, click on the UltraPlusPak drive (whichever drive letter is assigned), and then click on the Band-in-a-Box icon. This always works, and BIAB always references the directories on the hard-drive when it opens. Just run the setup from the HD and answer "Always Run From Hard-Drive," or whatever the equivalent is. That sets up the computer to access files on the HD.
I think the problem w/ trying to create a persistent shortcut on your desktop has to do with Windows re-scanning all attached USB devices at startup, at which time it reassigns drive letters. Even though the BIAB drive receives the same drive letter, to Windows it is a "new" drive.
'Hope this helps.

For curiosity, I just did a brief test.
I plugged in a USB flash drive and created a desktop shortcut to an EXE file on it. I did a Safely Remove of the USB drive and restarted the PC. After logging back in, the new shortcut is still there. Double-clicking on it brings up an error message that the drive or network is unavailable, and to connect it and try again.
So, everything worked as it should and the icon persisted.
Windows 7 64 here, in case that matters (but I don't think it does).

It might, Vista was a buggy mess for me & I could note wait to jump on Win7 x64...no problems here either.

1 The problem might be that Windows is seeing 2 icons with the same name and Windows don't like that. Change the name of the Icon to band in a box 2 or something similar.
2 If you right click properties on the icon that keeps disappearing make sure that you read and make a note of what drive it is due to start in and other settings in there, and keep a note of it just in case you need to use them again.
Apply both steps,
if all this fails just create a new folder on your desktop, copy (Please don't Use CUT) over the icon from your portable hard drive, rename it to band in a box 2 or biab, right click properties as described above and make sure the settings in properties are pointing towards your portable drive installation of band in a box.
