Is there a way to adjust the comp volume without having to adjust each instrument separately, and without BB sending MIDI master volume messages? I want to adjust the balance between the comp and my soloing, but I haven't found an easy way to do this.

Most users seem to invest in at least a 4 ch mixer.

http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-802-Premium-8-Input-Preamps/dp/B000J5XS3C/ref=pd_cp_MI_0

That one is 60 bucks.

I prefer a USB type to be honest.

That way you can mix the parts or record what you hear.

Later you can add powered monitors if you want.

Yeah, but I was hoping for a solution that doesn't cost money...

Most musicians have lots of gear. It shows you are serious. After all you laid out all that cash for this software a few dollars more...just ask mom, I wanted an amp but got a BBQ.

Many musicians are also sometimes strapped for cash, no matter how serious they are. I take it that BB doesn't have this feature, then :/

I don't follow what you are trying to do. There are plenty ways of adjusting volumes, both song specific and globally. I think you need to provide more details as to what you are working with and trying to do. Are you soloing through BIAB? Using an external synth? RealTracks? RealDrums? I'm sure more specifics will generate more helpful information.

All sounds are coming from my keyboard, including my solo sound, which does not go through BB. I need to adjust all the BB generated channels without affecting my solo. The Combo volume control is the closest I've found, but it also affects my solo sound. I'm assuming it sends a MIDI Master Volume message, but I might be wrong.

Keyboard is a Roland RD-700NX.

I too am missing something. Each instrument has a volume control, why not adjust them to the level you want on each tune then freeze and save? This way they will be locked in for the next time you play that song.

Am I still out in right field?

I have an external keyboard which I play. Midi Out of BIAB goes to the keyboard which is used for Acoustic Bass and Nylon Guitar. The output from both is controlled by the KB master volume. However, I am able to adjust my keyboard playing with a separate volume slider on the KB. I don't know the Roland but am sure it should have something similar.

Within BIAB, there are the the volume spinners which have been discussed. There is also a Midi normalize feature which may help. It is found in Opt|Preference|Arrange menu. Check the box and play with different numbers. I found 75 to 80 works for me.

R

p.s. The Combo control should not affect your solo sound unless it is being looped back through BIAB. What are your Opt|Midi settings?

I set the volumes I want and then save the song, but the volume does not take effect the next time I load the song. Is there a setting to control this? I have "Allow Volume Changes" in "MIDI Options" set to on. If I turn each instrument volume up a bit, then down again, it works. But I would rather not have to do this.

I can control the volume of my solo sound with a fader on the keyboard. But the sounds usually start at max volume, so I can't turn them up compared to the comp sounds, just down.

As for the Combo volume, I have no MIDI input driver selected in BB. So shouldn't be any looping of MIDI.

To put it another way: Does BB set the volume correctly when loading a song for other users?

Yes. Unequivocally. MIDI volumes once saved are recovered when re-opening a file. They get rendered right to audio, and they also save properly to a MIDI file. The feature has worked well for many years now, for me.

Wild guess: Can there be something happening at your synth level that is failing to register the volume settings? With luck, another RD user might happen along and suggest something. PG tech support would also try to help. Have you ever tested it with a different (hardware or software) synth?

Your problem is the setting for "Allow Volume Changes". This can be confusing. It doesn't refer to allowing YOUR volume changes; it means that the STYLE can over-ride your settings with whatever is set it the style. That's why it keeps going back to the original volumes. You need to turn this off (uncheck), and then save your song with YOUR volume changes. It should play fine the next time.

Hope that made sense.

If I disable "Allow Volume Changes", no volume changes are sent at all, so that doesn't work.

@allis: Unfortunately I don't have another keyboard to test with. And I don't have a software synth installed either.

I have the 2007 version of BB, if that matters.

#1. Save song with patches etc This is under the save options.

#2. Allow patch changes at any bar.

As far as #3 is concerned we are USERS.. Nothing to do with pg music but once in a while they come here when we argue about Yanks or Mets.

#4. Band in a box will be updated tu 2012.5 within weeks. You are thus 10 versions old, any many of us are, and I speak for myself and one other to be named later who are too old to remember that version.

This software is intended to be a backup band for someone who plays something or sings to be a baNd instead of hiring one.

So

I guess you bought or downloaded a pirate version. Now if you got this from uncle Jim after his funeral call pgmusic with his name and address and I'm sure they will give you a deal on an upgrade price, I'd get half off that ten bucks discount because I was dumb enough to spend 10 mins touch typing this in an iPad keyboard.

Now, now John. You may be right about him using a pirated copy. Or not. My feeling is that version is so old, who cares? If it gets him interested and he finds some helpful folks here, he begins to realize he's missing tons of very cool stuff. If he really is short of money right now then he's not a current prospective customer anyway. It true though it's hard to help him because none of us can remember what that version had for features.

I've always been of two minds about downloaded copies. On the one hand they're stealing the software, cut and dried. On the other hand you can argue it's really just like a demo for a lot of people, it gets the name out there, they find it really is a great program and they wind up wanting (and purchasing) the latest and greatest.

2007 is such a dinosaur I wouldn't worry about it.

Well, it seems to work now. Thanks for the help, guys!

Just using the regular Save function works, not sure what was the problem earlier.
