I'm using Acronis True Image and have no problem with backing up my C and D drive to an external HD.
However I'm confused about mounting an image. I mounted an image of my C and D drives and virtual drives L and M were created.
Question:
If my total system were to fail, how would I access drives L and M?

What you need to do, Don, is to create the Acronis True Image Boot CD. You shouldn't need to mount any of your images, unless you want to retrieve a specific file.
With the boot CD (and your external drive connected, of course), you boot to the CD and get a very similar interface to the Windows version. From there you'll be able to restore a hard drive. If you have any spare hard drives around, I would suggest giving it a try on a spare drive to see that it works. That way you become comfortable with it and you won't freak out when something bad does happen.

ATI just recently saved my butt, when one of my hard drives told Windows it was going bad. I was able to back everything up to an image before it failed, I replaced the drive with a new one, booted from the ATI CD, restored the image, and was back up and running as if nothing had ever happened. Total downtime was about 3 hours.

Don,
I once had to restore from an image, using the Seagate Disc Wizard software suite (which is, I believe, derived from Acronis TI). It worked just fine but took days rather than hours, so be warned!!

Hi, Marc -
I was using Acronis True Image purchased from Acronis, not a utility that came with a disk. My restores have never taken more than a few hours. Of course, if your external drive is USB-1, then yes, I can see that, but with a USB-2 (or now even USB-3, or even Firewire), it is pretty quick.
