Does anyone happen to have any Billie Holiday songs like Loverman or Good Morning Heartache?

Those lends themselves to the sax so well -- I'm not as fond of songs with lyrics as songs
that have instrumentals that "voice" the lyrics.

Make sense?

Thanks.

Makes total sense with a big BUTT . . . even songs with lyrics can have that ride/solo by a musician who can, as they used to say in the old days, "make that instrument talk." In fact we have quite a few of those cats here on the forum and at the risk of leaving many names out the two that come to my mind quickly are Graham and Mick as their phrasing, to me anyway, is faultless.

Later,

I've been told my instrument talks, but my neighbors don't allow it to talk much. ;-)

I looked in the directory and after thumbing through many pages found Bob N.
Is he the one you meant? Why is it I feel I'm looking for a needle in a haystack?

P.S. I think someone from BIAB saw my post, heard the song at the link I cited,
and commented:

"I can hear that sax speaking to me man!" One comment like that makes my day ...
well, more than a day ... much more. It's probably the same for everyone in music.

Thank you!! :-)

My instrument talks..... though it usually tells me it's time to retire....

As far as the instrument "singing" the lyrics thing.... track down David Sanborn playing "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". That sax almost speaks when he plays that tune.

No, to find Bob Norton (whose work I highly recommend), look for username Notes Norton.

If you sort the forum user list by # of posts, descending, he's near the top of page 2.

I'm Bob Norton but I go by "Notes Norton" because when I went on-line, before these forums, we did all our discussing on newsgroups. I started with alt.saxophone and there were already 2 Bob Nortons there so I chose the nickname my sister's former business partner called me, "Notes" and I'm afraid it's too late to change now

I have a number of fake disks at http://www.nortonmusic.com/fake.html

For Billie Holiday songs I suggest you look at Fake Disks 3, 5, 8 through 12, 14, 17 and 21. There are links at the bottom of the above mentioned page. When you open each page, there is a complete song list on the right hand side of the page, along with a couple of FREE samples.

Coming soon from Norton Music
  • 2 new style disks for Band-in-a-Box
  • 2 new free (with a purchase) fancy intro/ending disks for Real Band and other DAW's
  • The Ultimate Gospel Fake Disk
  • The Real Rock Fake Disk (plenty of classic rock in this one)
  • The Beatles Fake Disk
  • and if time permits, an updated Christmas Fake Disk

Just google for a complete list of Billie Holiday songs. Most of them are available in the Real and New Real Books. Use BIAB for backing tracks. Later, Ray

Hi Jim,

The fake disks are chord progressions, written in the key and the arrangement of various off-the-shelf fake books from publishers like Hal Leonard, Warner Brothers, Alfred, etc.

They will work with any Band-in-a-Box style, whether it is a MIDI or Real Track Style. You have the choice as to which style to use. I've made suggestions, but you can either agree with the suggestions or ignore them and use whatever you want.

That's one of the nice things about BiaB - you can play with it to your hearts content.
