I have found a computer I may purchase which is close to what I would build myself with warranty and Win 7 OS installed for a decent price.
But at that price it only comes with a 5400 speed HD.
I'd like to install the OS on one of my spare 7200 speed drives for the added speed.
If I decide to get that computer, what is the easiest way to put my Win 7 OS onto the faster HD?
Will it require contacting MS to activate the new OS on the faster HD?
Thanks for any advice. Carkins

You're not buying off-the-shelf, are you? Bad geek. No caffeine. You need an original copy of Win 7. It was mentioned earlier that you need to figure the cost of the OS into your PC budget. This is why. I don't believe a Restore copy is going to be adequate. Or you could try to get them to install a 7,200-RPM drive for you. But everybody here would feel better if you had a license complete with install disk.

Hi Ryszard, , Would it not be possible to "ghost" the machine and move it to the new one?

You can just clone the old drive and put the new one in its place. OEM Windows 7 is keyed to the motherboard so it isn't going to need any reactivaiton if you do that. I've always used Acronis to do my cloning but there is other software that will do as well.

If windows is installed there should be a serial number somewhere on the case. You can download windows 7 from microsoft, install it, and using your serial number register it as normal.

I highly endorse the EASUS products. Two are needed to do what you are trying to do - both free. 1. http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/home-edition/Note the sector by sector copy capability. When I had a failing hard drive with some bad sectors that I was trying to clone to a new drive, this was the only software that would power through the bad sectors. Acronis would bomb on the bad sectors and simply stop the copy process. The bundled software that came with the latest Seagate drive that I bought did the same thing. It wasn't until trying this EASUS product that I was able to copy the whole drive, bad sectors and all. 2. Once the clone is made (usually to a larger drive), then use EASUS Partition Master to set up the partitions on the new drive the way that you want them. http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htmGreat 1-2 combination from this company - can't speak highly enough of them. Now, that was all with Win XP Pro and putting the cloned drives back into the machines that the original drive came from (I don't know if Windows somehow looks at the processor ID in some fashion to determine whether the copy of windows belongs with the machine or not). Most replacement hard drives will come bundled with some type of disk imaging/copying software. My case was a little unique as the original drive was failing to begin with. I think that Seagate bundles an OEM version of Acronis with it's off-the-shelf hard drives. Try whatever ships with the replacement drive first. -Scott

RE: Ryzard
Still wading through all the possible options but here's what I finally came up with in "Off the shelf" vs "Build myself". Just discovered this i7 Asus 3AB model which cost only about $12 more than the i5 Asus 2AA I was looking at.
2AA had 12 Gig RAM, 2 T 5400 HD, NVIDIA Gforce GT 250 graphics card.
The 3AB has a 7200 1 T HD which would eliminate the need to copy OS.
Build it myself has bigger HD and power supply, no graphics card, better OS, but no warranty or support.
Reviews on this Asus model look pretty good. Reliability for Asus brand is up at the top of all brands. Reviews and reliability on "Build it myself" are a crap shoot.
ASUS CM6830-US-3AB Desktop i7 2600 3.4 Ghz 8 GB RAM 1 TB 7200 HD 802 wireless LAN Invidia GeForce GT530 Graphics card 300 w Power 10 USB ports DVDRW Optical drive Win 7 Home Prem 64 bit Cost: $810 (with shipping from TigerDirect with $10 off coupon)
vs "Build it myself" with parts from amazon and newegg
Intel Core i7-2600K Quad-Core Processor 3.4 Ghz
ASUS Intel Z77 ATX DDR3 2400 LGA 1155 Motherboard P8Z77-V 8GB RAM G.SKILL Ripjaws Series DDR3 1600 Rosewill R519-BK Black ATX Mid Tower Computer Case w/500W Power Supply 2 TB Western Digital HD 7200 Arctic Cooling Freezer 11 LP Heatsink with Ultra-Quiet 92 mm PWM Fan DVDRW not included, would use my spare Windows 7 Professional Cost: $802 (if I figured right)
Not sure yet if it's worth the risk to build it. Comparing similar systems is often like apples and oranges with the different option combos. Will keep researching. Learning a lot.
Thanks to all for the valuable input. Carkins

If he has a hard drive with no OS, how does he boot the computer to get on the internet to download the OS he doesn't have but needs to boot the computer to get on the internet?
I actually once heard a "tech" tell somebody to go online to download the drivers he needed for his network card so he could get online....
Use Drive Image or Norton Ghost and clone the drive. Easiest way.

The opening thread said a computer with win7 installed. It is advisable to download the OS and burn it to a disc for future disasters. The serial number on the computer is good to go.
