Hello all. It is with much trepidation I post my first effort! The vocals were recorded at home and seem to have some “crackles” so I need to redo them but I really want some feeback on what else I should change before I start again….This really is an experiment and a work in progress so any comments are welcome. It has all been made with real styles and harmonies are BIAB. I did not record any instruments. I look forward to hearing from you! I would push the vocals up hotter to give it some ooomph. Your pitch is good, your voice has a pleasant timbre. Keep writing!!

Dang, I'm jealous -- I didn't get 2012.5, so I don't have the cello! The vocals shined during the chorus. The verse had some lyrical timing issues (which means you gotta cut some words/syllables out). You did a good job putting this first tune here together. Very fine.

HI Joanne, Congratulations on your first post. I'm incredibly impressed! You only received BIAB a couple of days ago and here you are posting a song already! I think that that probably sets a new forum record of some kind I enjoyed your song. The melody + harmony + your singing worked really well for me. In fact, even though the song finished a couple of minutes ago, as I'm sitting here typing I can still hear you singing the chorus in my head. That's a good thing and says a great deal about the memorability of your writing. All the best with your BIAB adventure! Noel

Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate it. This BIAB is FANTASTIC, especially as I am just starting out on my song writing journey. I am looking forward to more writing and posting some more stuff. I am going to work on the lyrics as suggested by Kevin. They have been worrying me as I tend to stumble over some of them (and not really knowing why!) so cutting down on the syllables will help. Will try to get a better vocal recording but I really don’t know too much about it..I just plug my powered mixer into my pc and press record!….I am sure I will learn though. I am sure going to enjoy this ride.

Hi JosieC,
I had a listen to your acoustic song without Band In a Box and this one with Band In a Box. Band In a Box is good eh! (please don't think I don't like your acoustic version):)
I ran your song through a program called T-Racks and it certainly improved the clarity.
One suggestion would be to reduce the guitar strumming volume as it is competing with your vocals in places, but, hey a marvellous 1st try.
Keep em coming.
Well done
Regards George

Now the fun starts. Typically when I write something new, I DO have a groove and tempo in mind, but I also experiment with alternatives. I just have to wonder how this song would sound slower with a more deliberate groove to it. With more space, the guitar and vocal wouldn't compete to find the downbeat as much, and the vocals would shine given more room to breathe. Whatever the beats per minute are on this, I would suggest slowing it down by 4, listening to it again, then slowing it down by 4 more and so forth, until that guitar strum on the downbeat is very pronounced and dominant.
This is a song with potential. Play with it some. Strong first song ever!

Excellent first post! Instrumentation was really good and the vocal was nice and clear--maybe could be a little more out front. Looking forward to more!

apparently the name JOSIE means "talented"... seems to work out that way around here anyway welcome to the PG Music family! You fit right in! I echo Noel's comment that you may have set a new speed record for the time it took to post your first song after receiving the software! What a great testimony to you! I hope new people who are reading the forum wondering if there's too much learning curve to buy it take note of your rapid progress

Josie, Nice song! I really like your voice! This is an excellent first effort. I would suggest some separation on the guitars, cello, fiddle. Everything seems to be pretty much in the middle. You might try panning one guitar 20-40% right and the other left, same with the fiddle & cello. Experiment with different spots in the mix (I generally leave my drums & bass pretty much center) but other instruments can benefit from panning left or right. I also think some FX (reverb, chorus, etc) would add some nice flavor especially on the vocal, guitars & fiddle. Once again... Excellent first effort! I have a new song I've been working on for the last several weeks and hope to be posting soon. Keep it up, Greg

Pretty amazing first effort and a good song with a great vocal. I thought the drums might have been a bit louder, but overall I thought it a good mix. Well done.

Thanks all. I am going to give it another go and then post the end result. I really appreciate everybody taking the time to listen. I guess the reason I got up to speed quickly is that I am a kind of “read the manual” type of person so I was delighted when BIAB came with a printed manual all ready for me to get going…I have got so much to learn and am really looking forward to it.. A nice song Josie with well-crafted lyrics. An excellent start if you're new to homerecording!
As for suggestions, I'd play with the panning a bit more, I think you could take some of the instruments wider. Some high 'air' EQ on the vocals and a tiny touch of reverb would lift them nicely; they sound dry and slightly muffled.
Well done, you have a good ear for recording and a lovely voice.
John
PS: Many moons ago I used to live in Simonstown, not too far away from you?

Hi John. Small world. My family has a house in Simonstown so I have spent lots of time down there over the years. Magnificent part of the world. Thanks for the suggestions on the song. I busy putting a new version together so your thoughts are much appreciated. JosieC

I just listened again Josie and was thinking; would it better to hold the last chord of each verse for a bar (and the vocal)? This would add a point of suspense before the chorus launches in, and break the song up from being one continuous strumming pattern? Just a thought!
John
