If I want to reduce the volume for a section of a track, I can always use audio effects/gain change for that particular section. That's fine, but this changes the audio file permanently, and cannot be undone after saving (unless by loading the project from a backup, of course).
Its seems that we can control this with "envelopes" in piano roll view. As this won't change the audio file, it seems like the better alternative. But for a newbie its difficult to see how this should be done with the "drawing" tool at the bottom of the piano roll window. And the manual isn't very helpful, to be honest.
So please assist a newbie here: Am I right in preferring the envelope alternative to permanent audio effects, and - if so - how do I use this tool? Any help much appreciated.

Hi Kim and welcome to the forums.

There are two answers to your question. Firstly, if you prefer to use the GAIN CHANGE feature, you always have the EDIT - UNDO option as many times as you want until you're happy with the result. When you save, give the file a new name so that you can always roll back if you change your mind at a later date.

Secondly, if you want to use "envelopes" select the track and open the PIANO ROLL window. In the top right hand corner of the window, make sure AUDIO VOLUME is selected. In the lower section of the window, click and hold at the point where you want the volume change to start and drag to the new location and volume. When you release the mouse you will see a graphical representation of the volume change. Once again, you can use the UNDO command if you want to try again. You can put in as many volume changes as you want and when you play the track you should see the track faders move in either the TRACKS window or the MIXER. It is possible to remove all the volume changes from a track using the CUT command with the DATA FILTER.

Hope this helps. Get back to me if you need more information.

ROG.

Another method is to record the mixer moves as the song plays. You do this in the mixer window with the record mixer moves button. As the song plays move the track slider to control the volume as you want it. When the song finishes you can keep the take or discard it and try again. This doesn't affect the track either and you can delete the mixer moves at any time.

Both ways work.
The only problem with mixer moves is if using MME drivers the mixer moves will be a little late (as there is the buffer delay). So you may find you have to do them 'sooner'. Sometimes a couple seconds (literally).
If using ASIO (with smaller buffers) this is not as much of an issue.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Wow, three quick and great answers straight away. Hope I one day can be of some assistance to others, the way you guys are.
I'll try to stick to envelopes or mixer moves, even though audio effects seem quicker and easier. Somehow that seems the better principle , leaving the audio "untouched".
Thanks.
