I'm wondering if there are any software tools that are good at reducing vibrato. Inexpensive is good, too.

Other than, say "practice" and "breath control".

Pitch correction is very good at correcting wrong notes. It's less good at fixing dramatic pitch "scoops" at the beginning of words. (I've got lots of pitch issues).

Vibrato is another beast entirely. Google indicates that it's often a combination of not just pitch, but amplitude and even tone quality. So simply changing the pitch may not be enough.

With that caveat, are there any good tools for reducing vibrato? I've got a number of sneaky micro-editing things I'm considering. I've also got a demo copy of Melodyne that I haven't tried out yet that may work.

Other than re-recording the part (which is the obviously right thing to do, and what I'll probably end up doing), can anyone suggest a relative inexpensive software based solution?

Thanks!

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Can't answer your question directly, but I would think this is very difficult to do. Every type of (capable) instrument treats vibrato differrently and even every player. I play a number of wind instruments and for me vibrato is a personal thing, it depends on the setting (ballad, bluees) the space available, and its crafted individually for every note, fr example the last note in a phrase may get the full treatment (or not) whereas the same note in a less prominant position may not. Also the attack and the time it takes for the reed or embrochure to settle down all play an inegrated part. Some notes are too short for vibrato. On trumpet different players and setting call for different techniques The Trumpet Voluntary is vibrato less ( but usually has the reverb of a cathedral type setting, but Chet Baker solos can slide around a lot and play with the technique

Just my opinion

Thanks! I should have clarified that this is for a vocal... But your points still apply.

I suspect that this is something that's not really technically feasible, but it never hurts to ask!

I googled "reducing vibrato with melodyne" and found quite a few entries. It looks like it works OK sometimes and other times it doesn't. Maybe search some more with your auto-tune software.

From Cubase 5 on you have VariAudio. With this tool you can adjust pitch and vibrato (amongst other things). Melodyne will do the job also.

I agree that Melodyne should work, but you can also use the TC Helicon software which is bundled with RB. By using the pitch tracking setting you can isolate the offending note and use a midi note to harmonize to. You then have various options for applying vibrato, or not.

You may also be able to get some use out of Gsnap, which is a free auto-tune plugin.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I read through them. I was mainly wondering if there was some other cheap/free software I should be looking at.

I'm wondering what sort of artifacts I'll get if I timestretch the vocal (so there's time for the program to react to the vibrato), and the stretch it back down again...

Thanks for the responses - I'll check out Melodyne later this evening.

Does the feature (I believe it's the Pitch Drift funtion) work with Melodyne Essential?

Not sure of what daw software you are using. I use Sonar Producer and it has V Vocal as part of the program. I have used it many times for just what your talking about.

Not sure if this is the right video, but if you google V Vocal it comes up with lots of links.

Thanks for all the responses!

I've got the demo of Melodyne running, and it seems to do a pretty good job at selectively altering vibrato. So onto my Christmas list it goes...

Thanks again!

Many times (depending on plugin used) settings are available inside the plugin as to how much it suppresses pitch drift, how accuratetly, and how quickly. These should help control it.
... and some even add it intentionally.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome
