I have used BIAB for quite a while. I'm trying now to get RealBand up and running but can't get to first base. (Windows 7 64-bit)
I am trying to use my Steinberg Ci1 USB audio interface that comes with ASIO drivers to input my two Shure microphones. Every time I try to set up the audio in RealBand and bring up the VU meter to see if I'm recording, a pop-up box with an error appears and the whole program locks. I then have to reboot and start all over again... With the same result. I've tried several different setting but nothing works.
Can anyone give me help on what I'm doing wrong? Thank you. Tom

Under "Select one ASIO driver: Yamaha Steinberg USB ASIO
"ASIO ALWAYS ON" checked.
Input and output: Steinberg Ci1
What other settings are you looking for?
Thanks for your help... Tom

Is it possible another program is using ASIO already?
Other settings; Buffer size?
Does this happen if another driver is selected instead? (isolate problem)

The buffer size is 512 samples when I select the ASIO drivers.
I have checked to make sure that no other programs are using the ASIO drivers.
as I mentioned before, when I attempt to bring up the VU meter to see if I'm getting a response from my microphone, the program locks up and I have to log off and reboot the program. The error message that pops up just before the program locks up is as follows: RealBand access violation at address 004BCF62 in module"realband.exe". Read of address 000007FF at: 004BCF62.
I have tried a few different drivers and combinations of "input and output devices."including MME and the only difference is that the program doesn't lock up when I attempt to bring up the VU meters like it does with my Steinberg ASIO Driver.
So I can't really say any of this makes sense to me.
Has anybody ever used a program called TeamViewer which is I believe a free program that I have on my computer from some previous use. It enables somebody else to take control of my computer and thereby attempt to make the correct settings for me. I don't know if this is possible in this situation. Certainly there are other devices attached to my computer like microphone and the exterior Ci1 sound card that only I can control.... Just thought
I'm open to suggestion. Thank you. Tom
Also, isn't there a setting somewhere in this forum that notifies me by e-mail that there is a response to my post? I can't seem to find that.

Don't know if this may help, try setting Windows sounds to use the computer's built in sound card.

I played around with this idea with no success. But thanks for the suggestion.

When you select the USB as the output device, do you use the 'Move selected device to top' button? That sets the device as the default so the VU meter uses it. May be coming into play here.

I hate to say this but BIAB/RB can be problematic with ASIO.It has to do with legacy code I believe.Open the task manager and look at the processor.I bet it pegs out when you open the Vu meters.

It took me a little while to figure out what you meant by the Windows task manager and to "look at the processor." The task manager gives you sort of a running look at how the processor reacts when you do certain things. There may have been a slight spike recorded. I'm not sure if that's what I saw. What happens is I select the ASIO driver, and then click okay and leave that window back into the main window. I then click on the VU meter and immediately the error message pops up and the program locks and I have to log off and reopen the program and start over again.
The sequencing program that came with the Steinberg Ci1 USB interface is a program called Sequel LT. in operating that program, I am able to select the ACIO driver and that program then works and I can record with it. It doesn't lock up like RealBand does. I guess my only thought here is that maybeA the ACIO driver that comes with the Steinberg package isn't compatible with RealBand. Is that a possibility? That doesn't make sense to me since Steinberg (Yamaha)and Band In A Box appear to be standards in the industry. You would think they would be compatible.
So that's where I'm at. I'm open to further suggestion. If you have any thoughts. Thank you so much. Tom

As mentioned. Native ASIO drivers are sometimes an issue with BIAB/RB. Per PG music I wouls suggest you try ASIO4ALL. Not native but a work around.

Have you tried just recording a track without opening the VU window?? This may help us solve the problem. If you can indeed record, just can't open the VU it may be something completely different (like driver setup) than if you still can't record at all.
I'm sure I can set my system up to error on the VU meter, but still be able to record. At least I could with previous system.
When you open the VU it tries to use the default devices. Just how RB works. If you haven't selected the USB input as the *only* available device, and have a valid output device selected, and then clicked the 'move selected device to top' button you are not set up to use them as the default devices. It may be that you should instead use the driver's software mixer to monitor levels. For systems with multiple input selections, it is possible to make it so RB can not find the desired device, in which case I would expect an error when envoked.
We don't know yet if it is caused by input side or output side due to lack of details and responses.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

I think I followed your advice by attempting to record a track without opening the VU window. That is, first, I selected the ASIO Driver and then selected the Steinberg driver for both VU input and output. My next step was NOT to select the VU Meter but go directly to recording. I first tried selecting the "record audio" button. It did not seem to lock up at this point. Rather, I could hear the click track and the visual countdown. My mic was turned on and I could hear sound through my speakers. However, I could not tell if anything was being recorded. And when I click stop, I got no indication that there had been a recording that was made. I then tried clicking on the "record" button and got the same result. At this point, I tried invoking the VU meter and it came up. It did not lock up the program! The VU meter did not respond to a mic test. And I was able to close the VU meter and open it again without it locking up. However, the audio Setting button was not activated and I could not bring up that window. In other words that button seemed to be locked up. Likewise, the "file" "edit" "audio", etc., buttons were inactive and I was not able to close the program in the normal manner, i.e., the program was locked up in that sense. However, it was not locked up in the sense that I can still click the record and record audio button and get the visual countdown and the audible countdown Click sound.
I have no idea what this all means. But that's the best account I can give at this point what happened when I attempted to record without initially selecting the VU meter. I presume the only way I will be able to get out of the program is to control alt delete and log off of the program.
I'll try downloading the ASIO DRIVER LATER .
I have to leave now... Thank you so much for following me on this. Tom

I downloaded the ASIO4All driver. In the real band audio settings dialog window, I selected the new driver. An error window popped up for RealBand with the following message: audio and/or DXI Output will be silent. "The ASIO4ALL driver is not connected, likely due to your using a soft-synth (like GS-WaveTable) for MIDI."
The input ports window reads as follows: (0.1)HD Audio Muxed capture 1 + HD Audio Muxed capture 2
The output ports window reads as follows:(0.1) Not connected1 + Not Connected 2
Again, I can't figure out what this means. But obviously I haven't set up the new ASIO4ALL driver correctly.

I'm still struggling with setting up the drivers correctly. I downloaded ASIO4ALL and installed it. And when I select it as the driver in the Audio Settings and click okay, I get a pop-up error message as follows: "audio and/or DXi Output will be silent. The ASIO4ALL driver is not connected likely due to your using a soft-synth (like GS– Wave Table) for MIDI."
How can I correct this error to see if I can move this possibly a step forward?
Thank you so much. Tom

Have you tried to set the MIDI (options > preferences > MIDI) to use another soft synth?

Downloads this: http://www.wavosaur.com/download.phpDownload Wavosaur. Unzip/unrar it. Double-click wavosaur.exe Go to OPTIONS -> AUDIO CONFIGURATION Check the ASIO checkbox and then choose your ASIO hardware driver in both OUTPUT and INPUT boxes. Close that window. Go to OPTIONS -> MIDI CONFIGURATION and choose your valid MIDI devices. Now Record something with your microphone (press the little red circle in the upper left). When done, stop recording. Did it work? If it did, there is nothing wrong with your USB audio device, microphone or cable and the problem must reside in RealBand with YOUR hardware. If it does not work, your hardware, microphone or cable is bad. In either case, first COMPLETELY uninstall the existing drivers for your hardware (and I do mean COMPLETELY - including the registry). Now re-install the LATEST drivers (download them off Steinberg's website) for your hardware. Try recording in Wavosaur again if it did not work the 1st time. If it did, try recording Realband. Same problem in realband or wavosaur? Change out the USB cable. Try again. If same problem, go to another computer entirely and install the audio hardware. Record on that computer using wavosaur and then Realband. If it worked, your hardware may be bad or your USB ports may be bad or you have 'stuck' USB drivers and need to uninstall them from DEVICE MANAGER (make sure to unhide hidden devices). If all failed, try a new microphone (and XLR or 1/4 inch cable). If all fails, return your hardware and buy something else. Mike
