I have looked at most of the free video tutorials for BIAB and find them very helpful, but I am looking for something with a bit more detail.

I notice PG Music provides two sets of payware tutorial videos 'Band in a box video tutorial PAK' and 'Band in a box for Bozos volumes 1 & 2'. I don't know if any of these have been updated for Version 13, but I would like to buy one or the other, can anyone recommend which one would provide the best overall in depth guide to using BIAB 13.

Thanks

Glen

Hi Glen,

I don't know either of those two pieces of software but from reading their descriptions both sound good.

Why not shoot an email to sales@pgmusic.com, explain what you need the videos to accomplish and what your musical abilities are, and then ask for their advice as to which one would do the job better for you?

All the best,
Noel

Thanks Noel,

I think I will have to, there is a fairly good list of items in the Bozos video but no content list in the first video Pak ?

Glen, I bought the videos and they seem useful. But they are several versions old.

I was wondering about the age of them, especially the Bozo one....mainly because of how ole the Included videos are....

I just checked to see which one I bought and it was the one called "Band-in-a-Box Video Tutorial PAK". The video player they include is dated 2001 while the actual videos seem to be from around 2006 (there are some practice files with file dates from 1994, 1996 and 1997!)

I probably would not have bought this video had I known they were that old but maybe the core program has not changed much in 6 years (12 versions) and the videos are still relevant?

I have no idea about the Bozo video.

Thanks guys

I know the basics as I've used BIAB on and off for a few years, but was hoping to find some video's giving a bit more in depth guidance. If these video's are a few years old I think I'll give it a miss and plod through the PDF manual instead.

Some of the older videos are all that's available to learn certain procedures such as entering a melody using the qwerty keyboard. For me it was helpful even though it is some years old. Depending upon which level upgrade you buy, the videos are included as part of the package. I think that PG Music would do well to upgrade the older videos that are still applicable and also organize the videos to tie in with the Help module. I would not mind paying for upgraded tutorial videos.

I'm gonna check these out. BTW, I noticed he is using version 2008 for the videos so these are still not likely to be up to date.

Hi, been using BIAB for a few years primarily as practice tool and now am interested in creating original compositions including adding tracks for vocals, live instruments and looking for tips on how to go about this. I've read that the Record feature will save a WAV file along with the BIAB file which will do for the most part but longer term may want to incorporate into a single master type file to use with other products such as PreSonus Studio One. Is there some documentation available that pertain to this and other functions within BIAB to help me become more seasoned?
Thanks,
Frank

dunno if this will help but my workflow goes like this,

1) write chords and melody (maybe lyrics)
2) enter chords into BIAB and choose a style that fits what I have in mind
3) export the complete BIAB song as a WAV (if I don't have lyrics yet I write them now)
4) record vocals using the WAV as accompaniment in my recorder (I use a handheld field recorder)
5) export individual tracks from BIAB
6) import my vocal track and my BIAB tracks into my DAW and edit, mix, etc.

Hi Frank

I'm sure there's literally thousands of ways to utilize BIAB in the realm of recording within a semi, to pro studio setting (if this is what your leaning towards).

I use BIAB for many things , but lately with the new addition of realtracks and some other cool features, I've started incorporating this program into my general recording workflow in my home studio.

I'm using Sonar X1 Producer as well as FL Studio 10 as my main DAW's, but mostly Sonar X1.

My usual workflow is to write a scratch song on guitar or keys and then enter the chords into BIAB.
I then find a "Style" that's at least close to what I'm shooting for (sometimes I can find something that's dead on, other times I have to edit the "style" or "feel" with other samples or loops from other programs I own.).

Then I import the tracks from BIAB into Sonar via the "Drag and Drop" function.

Once in Sonar, the world is wide open for ideas! I sometime go back to BIAB to import more tracks or I'll play some live tracks on my own over the existing tracks I've imported. Or import samples from wherever.

I've recently discovered a cool way of editing "RealDrum" tracks.

I go to the RealDrum folder, grab the style I'm looking for and import the whole wave file, put it on an isolated track and if I need a cymbal hit or a fill at a point where there isn't one, I can "slice" parts of the file of the isolated track that I want to use on the drum track that needs that particular sound, and cut and paste and, Presto!

Really the options are endless and your imagination is your springboard to wonderful ways to produce, and mix endless types of music.

I used to have people laugh at me when I told them that I used BIAB back in the early 90's, but now people cannot believe that these weren't studio musicians that came into the studio "specifically" to play on that tune!!

I hope you have as much fun with this program as I'm having.
Keep an open mind, and don't limit yourself and ideas!!

You'll be surprised what's possible with BIAB 2013!!! I am!

That's excellent advice, Harpo. I'm learning to do stuff in Sonar X1 studio with both midi and audio tracks. As you say, there are unlimited possibilities.

Thanks for the tips Harpo. I'll try following a similar path only using PreSonus Studio One as the DAW. I'm currently using BIAB 2012 btw. I'll also take a look at Sonar X1.

I use BIAB and Cakewalk's Sonar X2 Producer as well. Bur I recently had an occasion to use Cakewalk's "Music Creator 6" - sort of light version of Sonar, and it's great, and only $40. Its user interface, while less than X2, is right up to date, and the midi and audio editing is a breeze. So if you are looking to get Sonar ($$$) as a way to further develop BIAB tunes you may want to consider MC6($). There is also a Sonar LE that comes bundled with other products (like audio interfaces, ...) that you may already have. Worth a look.

These might also be useful for some.

A lot of folks use RealBand for what you are wanting to do. It is the free DAW that comes with BiaB, and it can also generate tracks just like BiaB. It also does a few things that BiaB can not do when working with RealTracks, but one of the pro users will have to explain those.

It is not for everyone, but it IS usable, and would let you create both RealTracks & Audio in one application.
