My problem probably isn't with RB but someone here can tell me what is.

Trying to record from digital piano.
Line out from DP to mic in on win 7 laptop.

Records fine but there is a very loud hiss, not sure how to fix.

Easy.

Don't use the line in or mic in on your computer or laptop.

Instead, get pro audio hardware with ASIO and input your mic there (with a XLR or 1/4 inch cable).

A nice cheap one is a Presonus Audiobox USB (2 channel and can be used with the ipad)
Or the Zoom r16 (8 channel inputs and 32 tracks)
Or the Focusright Saphire (8 channels in and can be used with the ipad)

You are getting hiss either because (a) you are using consumer grade crappy audio ins on your computer, (b) you are using consumer grade crappy audio ins on your computer AND your cable may or may not be introducing MORE hiss or (c) you are using consumer grade crappy audio ins on your computer AND your cable may or may not be introducing MORE hiss AND your digital piano output may have a short or also be introducing MORE hiss.

Change your cable and try to record into a mp3 player or preferrably some higher end audio device, like a zoom H2 or H4 or any field recorder that is 'pro grade'. If you hear hiss and you changed out the cable, then it's the digi piano.

NEVER EVER record into your computer or laptop using what came with it, unless you just don't care about the audio quality or fidelity at all.

Mike

Hi Danna.

There is a big difference in quality between the mic and line inputs on most computers. I wouldn't recommend using the mic input for anything, but the line input should produce acceptable quality with a digital piano. If you only have one input socket on your computer, you will have to select Mic or Line through the windows software mixer.

Lots of our students are using standard line inputs with excellent results.

Mike is right in that the hardware he suggests is far better quality, but it is more expensive.

Agree with ROG, you should be able to use those inputs with no problem. If the input is not switchable between Mic or Line (like my older HP) Make sure that..

1. There is not some kind of Boost on. On mine I have a button in the Control Panel to boost the Mic Input +20db. That alone adds a ton of hiss even with NO signal plugged in!

2. Turn down the input in the Windows Control Panel and turn up the output on the Keyboard. It might take a little playing around going back & forth, but you should be able to drop the hiss a lot & get a useable signal.

3. And as always. mono-to-mono & stereo-to-stereo cables.

Good Luck!

@Rog
Thanks for the info ... only see a mic in showing on mixer, no option for line in that I can find.

@jcspro40
Thanks for the info on mic boost ... did find that and it was turned on.
I'll lower it and see how it goes.

Thanks

Mic boost - if you have that setting there is a good chance your audio input is low quality to begin with. Many different models are built without ever considering audio recording.

But it's worth a shot. You may find enough improvement for the need. Just know there is a decent chance you'd notice the difference with a better audio input device.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Your Very Welcome Danna, I hope it works for ya!

And a dedicated Audio interface is well worth the money when you are ready to step up, and it WILL be noticeable the first time you use it compared to the built in audio.
