Not entirely sure how the style of this piece is going to fit in here, but here goes anyway. https://soundcloud.com/music-prof/shell-never-knowThe song is about a relationship break up (nothing original there, then) and I've tried to use tempo changes to create moods varying from anger through to despair and sadness. Not exactly a happy little song! It's a PowerTracks project, so everything is played in live and it's all mixed in PT as well. Most of the vocals are by Jessie and Courtney who you may have heard on sessions for Eddie, but there's a bit of me in there too. For those of you who say I use too much reverb, here are the lyrics in case you can't make them out. It's funny how the way it is You only hurt the one you love And when she's gone you always find You only want what you can't have. And when she asks can we still be friends And not react like lovers do Though the answer's always yes She'll never know what that does to you. She say's it's good to end this way And so you smile and carry on You play a part as on the stage And try to act like nothing's wrong But if by chance you see her face Across the street in some crowded place You turn and run like cowards do So she'll never know what that does to you. Thanks for listening. ROG.

Hi Rog, The opening had me from the first chord onwards! To my ears, the production of this song is incredible and sounds like something off the radio - great arrangement, great mix, great attention to detail. For what it's worth, I didn't think there was too much reverb All the best, Noel P.S. Could you please let the girls know that I think their singing is getting better and better every time I hear them! They sound really professional.

Hi ROG
Very impressed. Fantastic sound. I like that it is not sad sounding but matter of fact. A foot tapper.
Love all the vocals and the whole recording. Beautiful guitar playing.
The tempo changes are really cool and effective. Excellent job!

Great work, Rog, all around... It has plenty of punch, nice mix, and I agree, not too much reverb. The fiddles in the middle may be a bit too prominent. I enjoyed your (male) lead... I assume that is you. Sounds to me a bit like Dylan. I would maybe bring it a little more out front. And why on earth shouldn't this "fit in here"? Too sad, you mean, or not country enough? Do I understand that you played all the instruments, and so it is "too musicianly"? That's a good thing...

EXCELLENT ROG, I like the glissando at the start of the song, and the riff dadada da dadada da is stuck in my brain now and so I made my morning coffee in time to it a la Eric and Ernie Is this the start of the British Invasion of the User forums of PG Music?? good stuff Alyn

Very nice production using Power Tracks. I don't hear too much reverb. Tempo changes fit very well. Thanks for sharing! My Tunes

Very cool sound. Loved the guitars. And, ROG, love your vocal! - Tom Petty meets Bob Dylan (if Bob could actually sing) - a VERY cool sound. It did help to have the lyrics.. floyd

A BIG +1.
I agree that the reverb is perfect!
All I can add is super mix!
Two thumbs up.

I want to say I liked this, and I did to a certain extent, but in your own words, there seems to be too much studio-type 'effect' on it, 'reverb' is it? The girls sing beautifully once again, but without the lyrics, I doubt I would have understood 95% of what was being sung. After three listens, in my opinion, it lacks clarity or crispness. I've read all the other comments and I agree that its got a catchy riff during the verses and that it is performed well, though I am not so sure that the slower tempo bridge coincides all that effectively, which, could be interpreted as as a personal preference, perhaps, on my part, but it made it seem to me as though I were listening to two different songs.

Great song, excellent singing, nice arrangement and mix. I love the bridge, and the playing is all top notch - there is some really nice guitar work in there! As for the intelligibility of the lead vocal... well, I'm not seeing any request from Roger on feedback on how to improve the sound. But (stepping into the fray anyway) I think clarity here has more to do with vowel selection: choosing to keep that cool Dylan/Tom Petty sound, or substituting a different vowel sound so us "mid-Atlantic" speakers can understand the lyrics. I think Roger's providing the written lyrics answered that question.

I did not 'feedback' with any suggestions on how to improve the sound, I simply suggested it could use some improvement. Please allow the author himself to address my criticism(s) if he so chooses. There is no 'fray' taking place here worthy of mention, save that I am not terribly interested in your opinion on my critique.

Sorry, I obviously wasn't clear here. I was responding to Roger's initial statement: Quote:
For those of you who say I use too much reverb, here are the lyrics in case you can't make them out.
The commentary was just to acknowledge my own history of giving unrequested feedback to folk, and that I realized I was going ahead and doing it yet again.
Some forms of "humor" just don't translate well...

My apologies, then. This song has good potential, believe me, or I would not comment to start with.

Many thanks to everyone for taking the time to listen and comment.
The girls and I had lots of fun putting this track together and we're overwhelmed by all the kind things you've said.
Jessie and Courtney are obviously very talented, but it's not so often that I get positive comments about my own voice! The girls have started writing their own material, so we hope to be able to post that in the near future.
Thanks again, ROG.

WOW! ROG, this is nice!!!! This is almost Classic Rock with a hint of Pop in there. I think it was produced just a tad too hot, but that's just my sensitive ears (about the only thing sensitive I have left). Great song all around, though. And yes - there's a bit of a ABBA feel to this. Nice tune, really!!! Cheers, Mike
