Ok, here's my first effort for the new year.
Alternative title: "The Slacker's Lament", you'll see why when you listen! I hope you like it.
Components are loops from Drums On Demand, BIAB RealTracks for steel guitar parts, BIAB MIDI for help with piano, organ and synth parts. Tremelo guitar and other lead frills and vocals by yours truly.

Listen: here.
Listen ('Radio Edit' shorter!: here.
Lyrics and notes: here.

Ok...I'll chime in and give you a bump.

In my subjective opinion....

The song is put together well and the vocal is appropriately up front in the mix.
Good vocal deliverance and good separation.

To be honest, I'm not fond of the tremelo on the axe track but you have your preferential reasons.
I believe it's referred to as creative license.
It may be you needed to differentiate between the two guitar tracks.
I also think that track gain could come down a db or so.
Personally, I would replace that with a (not terribly busy) rasty rock organ track.

Hope that helps and good luck with your endeavors.

Keep up the good work.

A very strong mix here. Everything seems clear and in its right place. Pretty good story. Overall a super cool listen -- good start to writing in 2013! Probably could have cut that last minute out, though.

John,

I agree with Kevin - a very strong mix. Great job on the drums. Great job on everything for that matter. The tremelo guitar on the right seemed a tad "up" through the early verses - and then seemed to settle into the mix really well for the rest. Loved the sound - and the story...

John - Loved this one. I also love the tremelo - can't have too much tremelo. I think your voice has a real Ray Davies aspect - great.

I liked 50Gs a lot. The Stones meet David Bowie meet Dire Straits.

Fun song. Very creative use of all the music elements, drum loops, midi, RTs, etc.

Great sound, only the ending is a bit long and repetitive.

John:

Great song, great groove!! Voice is terrific, and well-suited, and it gets better over the duration.

I especially liked the chorus -- the changes, vocals and groove. And I highly respect the way you have rhymed each and every line... uncommon. I agree with others, you could end it earlier.

I loved it John. Great music mix, loved the story and the vocal reminded me of Eric Burton - that's a compliment. I think the arrangement gives it a great feel. You might shave off the ending a little but it really didn't bother me much.

Well done.

Hello John

A really good song - as usual. I liked the tremolo guitar, it complements the other instruments very well - nice groove

Even though the song is over 5 minutes long I didn't loose attention due to the variation in the song. Yes, the ending is a bit long.
Looking forward to hearing more.

Many thanks for all the kind comments friends!
In response to popular demand as they say, I've done a 'Radio Edit'! - half a minute taken off the outro:
Is this better?
'Fifity Grand' - shorter version.

Blimey Brad, I hadn't noticed that until you pointed it out! I confess it was a 'painter's accident' not a clever plan!

Two opposable thumbs up. New ending works great. Really good song, I enjoyed revisiting. If you had an album coming out, this would be the single.

Great idea for a song.

The really punchy drum sound kicked it off right from the first bar and there's some nice texture in the arrangement. Lots of expression in the vocals and a good mix. As you've already identified, the original was a trifle long, but a good start to 2013 nonetheless.

Hi Skyline,

I really like this song.
One of the better ones on the showcase (in my opinion).

Well done

Keep em' coming

I really liked this...good use of all your tools, as has been mentioned before..my only comment would be this: I don't think you need the 8-or-so bars break that has "For the time I was a (wait staff?).." Musically I don't think it has the same impact as the rest of the song...I would consider leaving that part out. Other than that, it was an A+!

Very enjoyable song - even prior to the "radio edit!"
